Quote:I do not think there is any such thing as an outlaw songwriter. It is just a made up category that means nothing at all.Willie and Waylon both paid their dues as outsiders bucking the system. That's all it really means. And Townes was a classic--both a good writer and someone outside the system.

These made up categories still make me squeal. If any of those cats had to deal with a real outlaw they would revert to sucking their thumbs. It is a way to sell records. I really like many of the singer/songwriters who are categorized that way, I just do not condone the category. Next they will probably have some guy who does not even write his own material categorized as an outlaw. Hmm...he only covers the tunes of people who are outlaws. What an outlaw that guy is.I cannot accept a heterosexual sissy as an outlaw, but a gay sissy, I guess that would indeed be an outlaw. Though not an outlaw Nashville will roll out the red carpet for. Are there any overt homosexuals in country music? Seems unlikely. K.D. Laing could sing about as well as anyone breathing, but her sexuality may have cut her chances of super success in country. Yes, she was a real sissy, that girl. Get some tatoos and a gladiator glove, sweetie.

I think the greatest outlaw songwriter is Hank Jr. He was one of the first guys coming out of country with a dirty sound, which made him a marked man. In "Family Tradition," he even accuses himself of rolling smoke.

Not sure why you care much one way or another what they call themselves. I have some pirate friends in the Caribe who wouldn't mind punching out Jimmy Buffet for calling himself a pirate, but then they are (very good) musicians. (There is actually a sort of "remember St. Bart's" cult built around disliking Buffet--the man, not his music)
