Pop/Rock American Idol Listing

Post by tuite » Sun Sep 27, 2009 4:47 pm

Hey guys,I did a track for the current American Idol listing. They mentioned Kelly Clarkson, Pink and the song is to be about love lost rather than love gained. So any thoughts, comments or feedback is welcome. The song is at www.taxi.com/moppyCheers,Colm.

I listened to your song "Over You". The tracks sound decent, but since the listing is asking for a female vocal it would be great if you could get a female to sing it. If you leave the male vocal, it's in need of pitch correction. It's also helpful if you post the lyric. I think this has possibilities with a female vocal. Nice Job.Buc

+1 on what Buc said.I think the elements of a pop song are there, but I'd consider having a female sing it.

Hey guys,Thanks for the comments. I know the vocal isnt great, I had a friend coming to do it but she couldnt make it. Its due in today so I wont have time to get another vocalist. Vocals are not my strong point and there is already a LOT of pitch correction, should I do some more?I was kind of hoping that since its a pitch to an artist and its gonna be re-recorded anyway, that the male vocal wouldnt really matter and the label could see through it?Cheers,Colm.

You do mean for us to listen to "Over You", right? Well, if they are asking for a female vocalist, and you have a male vocalist singing it, I think it might be rejected outright. I really like this song though, it's got some great melodies and song structure and rhythms, it would be nice to see the lyrics though. The lyrics are probably the weakest thing here, some of the phrases seem a bit hard to understand.Hope this helps! -Jeff

Oh yeah sosrry, the song is Over YouHere is the listing:NEW LISTING -- FEMALE TOP 40 / HOT AC HIT SONGS still needed immediately by a Management Company and Major Label for a former American Idol runner up who has become a highly visibile female TV personality. They're looking for that one last upbeat/high energy radio single! Driving verses that build and highly memorable choruses that deliver a "slam dunk radio hook" are a must! Lyrics should reflect more love gone bad rather than fairy tale bliss. NO BALLADS please. Stylistically think Pink's "So What," "Who Knew," "Sober," as well as Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone," "I Do Not Hook Up," and "My Life Would Suck Without You." Additional examples were Natasha Bedingfield's "Pocketful of Sunshine" and "Unwritten." Vocal and instrumental demo presentation must be top-notch! We originally ran this as Dispatch listing #D090908AC and they want to hear more, so if you submitted to the Dispatch listing, please send in new material this time around. It never specifically says they only want female vocals. It just says the artist is female so they want female songs. I was thinking, this is a female song, so the voicee wont matter, am I wrong? Here are the lyrics:Over YouVerse 1I can't believe you thought I'd buy into your lies,What did you really take me for,So many letdowns and yet you were still surprised,When I turned and showed you the door.Pre-Chorus'Cos I won't be waiting up,So you can let me down,N' I kinda like it when,You're not around.ChorusWhen you first left I must admit,I thought a tear might fall,On second thought I realised,That I don't care at all,You can keep your diamonds,'Cos I don't give a damn,All that's on my mind is,That from now on I am,Over you.Verse 2No use in crawlin' back or turnin' on the charm,It just won't work on me no more,Go find another girl to decorate your arm,'Cos your not the man I thought you were.Pre-ChorusIt all got so messed up,But now it's all so clear,'N I kinda like it when your not hereChorusBridge'N I threw out those flowers,You left on my doormat,A desperate last-ditch effort,But I'm worth more than that,So go find someone new,'Cos I am over youChorusCheers,Colm.

Well Colm, it says female vocals, and this is not female vocals, so I think the TAXI screener is going to just reject it on that premise. Female's have different vocal ranges and such than males, and if those producers really didn't care what gender the original song was, they would make that clear in the listing. If this is for an Americal Idol runner-up, then the bar is set really high; they're not going to accept anything but what you think is the absolute best you know you can do. Hope this helps!, -Jeff

Well it said "female songs" but never mentioned "female vocals", so I presumed that just meant the song had to be female oriented (about guys being pricks etc.) and not nessecarily sung by a female. So your all fairly sure about this? Im sitting here in denial! I took care to choose a key that would suit Kelly Clarkson and to ignore my own range, hence me screaming like a hyena in the chorus.Could TAXI clarify this matter for me if I rang them?Cheers,Colm.

Colm: Having been at the Taxi convention last year, I realized how many people are competing to get a cut. If it's for a female artist, you can almost bet that every submission except yours will have a female singer, that's how seriously people take their submissions. Secondly, I'm going to predict that a screener will take issue with the lines, "you can keep your diamonds . . . all that's on my mind is . . ." The guy keeps the diamonds? Usually, it's the female who has the diamonds, and keeps them if at all possible when things fall apart. It's a nice rhyme -- but it will have people scratching their heads. Please don't take offense -- I think you're headed in the right direction, and actually, you sing better than me.Ott

I understand! I rang TAXI to confirm and they kinda seconded what everyone has been saying. She said a good song is a good song and it will get forwarded regardless, but because so many pairs of ears have to approve the song, it should be as good as it can be.I have a girl doing it at the moment but its not great, theres no attitude in her vocal, its far to clean cut. When I wrote that line I was thinking, Kelly Clarksons audience isnt really the bling bling, girls like Nelly Furtado or Rihanna wud have, she has more of a rock chick audience. Them girls arent into diamonds as much so "you can keep your diamonds", was supposed to be more like, I never wanted them in the first place, you cant buy me with diamonds kinda thing? Not necessarily that he wants them back, more that shes throwing them at him.I take your crticism on board, its welcome. Thats how we learn, anymore critics? Cheers,Colm.
