New Song - This Time

Post by cameron » Tue Jan 27, 2009 10:37 pm

Hey y'all,Here's a work tape of my latest song for your comments. The empty sounding part starting around 2:02 is the instrumental solo that hasn't been put in yet. This is meant to be a work tape to be re-recorded later. It was intended to be a country song, but I think it might be pushing the envelope there as to me it sounds a little Steely Dan (minus the talent) in places, plus the lyrics are a bit strange for country. My girlfriend thinks Traveling Wilburys. Funny how these things morph during the recording process. That's kind of the fun of it though, isn't it?Thanks for the listen.Camhttp://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_id=2050 ... m=trueThis TimeMeeting new people is hard to dothis timeThe women I meet are just like youthis timeI've had enough of you and meIt's time for a little tranqulityI don't want another uphill climbthis timeAin't nobody gonna play your gamesthis timerun me down or call me namesthis timeI've been around a time or twoI know what I want and it aint youI want somebody who's a friend of minethis timeIt's peaceful here these dayseven though the nights get longI don't miss all that mean cuisineI don't miss being wrongMaybe I'm fussy now I don't carethis timeI just know that I'm not going therethis timeLove's hard to stop, once you're in itif you're going for the goldthen you might as well win itlet the moon and the stars alignthis time

Cam, Great hook man! And you have some great lines in there. "I don't miss all that lean/mean cuisine." That's hilarious. And this was catchy, "Love's hard to stop, once you're in it and if you're going for the gold then you might as well win it let the moon and the stars align" the prosody seemed perfect. I do think this is stretching out of country. And that's okay unless you are married to country...you don't want to upset her messing around with another genre. I'm hearing similiarities with Billy Joel and maybe even some oldies. The main critique I would make is that I didn't feel that the chorus and the verse were different enough. The melody sounds different...I think it's more the rythm. I can't think of the technical term off hand...Good stuff Cam. My opinion is only my opinion...and according to my wife it's a little annoying.Andy

ah, Cam my friend, there it is--THANK YOU!man, i LOVE this tune--musically the vibe is the "funner" side of you, production too, love the backing "this time." "mean cuisine"--great line, and a great twisty attitudinal way of looking back but looking forward at the same time...NOT an easy thing to pull off...like starting on the way up, or on the way down on the teeter tawter...hard to tell in a snapshot picture which one it is, but you're right there!! (gee, i just reread that, and sorry, it's a bit weird, hope you know what i mean...)indeed, you have served up the second course of some damn good cuisine here my friend!!QUALITY CAM, quality. a keeper...3rd course please!all the best, warren

OK, I can relax now. I know I'll always get the strait scoop from WH. He never lies. Thanks for the feedback Warren.I think the dry humor will probably keep it from working as a country song, but I'm going to try it anyway. Gotta push the envelope, and you never know when an artist is wanting to try something different. Andy, I know what you mean about the variation between verse and chorus. Actually there is no real chorus, but I know what you mean. I played around with changing it more but it's such a groove oriented tune that I found it sort if disruptive when I changed up the rhythm. Sort of like Steele Dan's "Hey Nineteen", I sort of felt it needed that constant rhythm throughout. Actually, one of the tunes I had in mind when I wrote this was Billy Swan's "I Can Help", which was a crossover country/pop hit from the early 70s. It has that same sort of swaying rhythm going throughout.Matt, thanks for the kind words. It was fun to do something a bit different.Cam

Cameron,This is sensational! I still have 'Cold Feet' running through my head due to the strong hook, and here you go again!Nice crystal clear recording and beautiful phrasing. And btw- you did indeed say "Lean Cuisine" here correct? I played it 30 times because you have mean written- but I hear lean! I swear I hear lean Maceman

Hey Maceman,Thanks for the comments. Man, I'm glad you like it! I do say "lean" cuisine the first time, and "mean" the second. I'm still not sure which one will stick. I'm thinking "mean" perhaps because it has sort of a double meaning. "Lean Cuisine" implies she couldn't cook, so I don't know which really works best. What do you think? If I were to stay true to who I wrote the song about "mean" would be it, as she was a great cook with a mean streak.Cam

...thats a tough call....I think the Lean Cuisine line is funny, but maybe the company who makes those nasty boxed dinners might want royalties Either one works though!Maceman
