Hey Cam, I don't hear anything that would make this unacceptable sound wise. Sure, it could maybe be improved with some mastering & real bass but I don't think either of those are big enough issues to be a deal breaker. If I were you I'd be tempted to leave the bass out & spring for the $75 mastering job- I really dig this song, sounds like it could become a standard.

Is it just me or do I hear some distortion/clipping on the piano? Might want to look into that. But for the most part, the quality of this song is definitely good enough, I think. There's no major mixing flaws, no lack of compression. Some things I am noticing is that the song jumps/stops suddenly every once in awhile, that would need to be fixed. And again, that piano is definitely clipping, so fix that as well and you're pretty much set, in my opinion.-Jeff(EDIT: I think my computer is acting up, so those jumps/stops are prolly just my stupid computer)

Cam,Very cool tune and nice recording. I found myself wanting to hear drums start in the middle to drive it home. And maybe a more engaging solo (sax?). Bluesier. But, really, the way you have it done is sweet and controlled and probably better for the setting. Congrats and good luck with it!Vince

I was feeling really inadequate about this song but I feel better now. It's a real personal song for me (I actually did write it on Mother's Day eve) and I always felt maybe it's too personal to stand on its own as a song that others might want to listen to too.Dave, yeah I do hear Wasted Time in there now that you mention it. I liked the Eagles but I wouldn't call them a big influence on me, except that I did play Wasted Time about a million times in a band I used to be in. Good ears, Jeff. There is a touch of distortion on the piano. I have been fighting that with my setup lately. Not sure exactly where it's getting in but I suspect my tube preamp. I have the performance stored in a midi file so it would not be too hard to re-record it. Vince, you're right. I did this at home with what I had to work with. Someday I would like to re-record this in a real studio and would love a sax solo.Warren, you're the best. Thanks for all the support. Anyway, thanks to everyone who responded. I only have a few days before the deadline so maybe will try to polish it up.Cam

Pianos have huge transients that go by really quick, easy to miss on a VU meter, a common mistake. No need to burn up the levels with piano, particularly with close-miked samples. (I've heard distortion in the actual samples, even) This sounds very, very good, Cam, but it isn't quite a final. I think it needs a bit of a remix as well as mastering, but it's good news if you have access to the multitracks; the bit of organ can be expanded on to 'church' it up a bit, and a guitar, sax or piano solo can be flown in, since you've got the MIDI files. Even better, the performance is rhythmically tight enough, I think you could get by overdubbing drums, which would impart a bit more impact. Can't toss in that "prayer" line unless you can re-cut the vocal, which has one, count 'em, one note that could use a pitch touch-up. A touch of pre-delay might help the vocal reverb sit better in the track, and maybe a smidge less 'verb. How long to put this together?

Great song Cam...just great.I'll chip in $20 to hear what Mojo would do with it. Any other takers wanna see this happen?!? How much Mojo?!?If it is for use "as is", then I'd print out what others have said here, highlight the common themes, and find a way to get to work on it. I'm on my lousy latop connection, so I'll refrain from analyzing it right now. There's folks here on the forum that would spend hours on this tweaking stuff, just for the bragging rights.Damn, I've wasted over 100 hours on just one song that isn't good enough to be on the CD that's used as a coaster under the coffee of the assistant of the executive who should be signing this tune. You know?
