Red Knight of Brittany

Post by hummingbird » Tue Nov 25, 2008 6:24 pm

I was diggin' around looking for 'world' tracks & came up with this one that I started a while back. Thought I'd post it for opinions & feedback, cause I kinda like it. Red Knight of Brittanyhttp://www.vikkiflawith.com/audio/VIKKI_FLAWITH-Red_Knight.m3u

Hey Vikki,I'm especially happy to listen and comment as you've been so generous with your own participation on the boards!Great sound here with lots of space and separation and authentic-sounding instrumentation. Super mix and production. I assume your goal is TV/film cue as it seems especially suited for that, with its consistent feel and rhythm, but lack of melody. The "instrument" that comes in during the break at 2:26 put the piece a little more in the electronica realm for me and I thought that detracted from the otherwise organic feel.Hope to hear more of your stuff in the future!Vince

I really like your stuff, Vikki! This feels a bit like an action-movie piece, something where the hero and his team of native guides are exploring an area of the jungle where the world-famous archaeology professor (and his beautiful daughter) were last heard from. Love the use of space, and the way the tune progresses and changes. Definitely has an electronic, maybe even trance-ish feel to it, with a worldly flavor. best, gw

That's great. I think you're very adventurous as a composer and it really works in this. I like all the different influences, world, techno, avante garde all mixed together, it suggests a number of different emotions all at once, which might make it useful in a variety of film/tv settings. Good luck with it, Elser

Nice Vikki.Very atmospheric.Conjures up quite a selection of movie scenarios.I was thinking it was a bit long, but then realised the track was half way through replay.

Love the start - super tension with world music! The change up at :42 is really abrupt imho - maybe if there was more carrying over of an 1/8 or 1/16 note percussive element somehow to bridge it? I totally "get" the change in beat - which is a cool idea - but its a harsh change to me. The 2:26 change is really cool - I like the new sound and the way you incorporate it back in with the instruments from the first section. Very adventurous and very tense piece.

Red Knight of Brittanyhttp://www.vikkiflawith.com/audio/VIKKI_FLAWIT ... ht.m3uwell ... vikki, no koolaid necessary here!or maybe it is ...first off, the beat is great. it speaks of action ... there's a lot in here tho ... and it's a bit confusing although (as stated) void of melody. it all sounds great. and it all has a place ... at times, I feel, not necessarily in the same song but there is merit in everything in this piece.I hear it as something that bits and pieces could easily be removed from for various scenes of a given documentary. or various documentaries actually ... it's got lots of intrigue and a lot of imagined space within it. lots of room to interpret and place imagery into visually.as music, it leaves me completely and totally apathetic and void of emotion but I don't think you were aiming to grab anyone's heart with it in any fashion so that's not much of a problem.obviously, you'll find a spot for it with one of these requests from taxi - and given a certain amount of luck, you should be successful in landing something cus it's surely professionally crafted and produced.I doubt I'll be humming myself to sleep with it and I hardly think the birds will wake me with it's tune but I do know it would fit into some of what I've seen on educational BBC tv ...and that's not a bad market if that's what you're looking for with your stuff. it's absolutely credible as such.so good luck with it.btw - your profile lists you as a vocal teacher, can you point me to any of your lessons online ... I'm curious about that ..
Gave up guilt when I left the ol' school girl uniform behind. You know, cute little skirts and knee socks, nuns and rulers and all that.

Thanks everyone, for your thoughts & feedback on this!!!! I really appreciate the time, and will consider all comments as I move forward. Let you know what happens if something happens with this track, too. Appreciate the help!cheersHummin'bird PS - cj, thanks for asking - I don't have any lessons on-line. I teach live, in person only. (I have a mistrust of books, CDs, DVDs & on-line resources... not that they are bad in themselves... but they offer no feedback, thereby leaving the student 'teaching themselves', not knowing if they've understood instructions or if they're 'doing it right'. IMO the best way is to work one-on-one live and in person with someone who is experienced and listening to the student with all their senses, and can give instant guidance.)
