New Tune, Heavy Rock...

Post by wta » Wed Nov 26, 2008 7:34 pm

I've been nocked out by the flu for the last week so I've haven't been online to much and my production schedule is in a sorry state but I've got this new tune coming into shape. I'm getting ready for vocals/lyric but have drums, bass and guitar tracks. I will be doubling the last chorus. Thoughts?http://www.williamthomasanderson.com/w2/caged.mp3 Y'all rock! ;-) wta

hey willie--got to hear the vocals to get the full feel of this as anything but what i'm hearing now--an instrumental backing kinda track, that in it's current form, is pretty on the ordinary side, except for the cool FX. there are some interesting things happening here, but without the vox, it is not as "alive" as many of your tunes i love my friend. i really want to hear this with the vocal! so that's all i got tonight!the best, warren

Yup, no melody there yet. This darn plauge I've beem smitten by has really tossed me vocals out the window on me. I've backed the truck up to see where they fell out but still hunting... Anyone got a flashlight? ;-) wta

Thoughts?http://www.williamthomasanderson.com/w2/caged.mp3 Y'all rock! ;-) wtawillie is it? cj here ....hey ...I dig the basic drum vibe, it moves .... and the kit itself doesn't sound bad - except you bury it in this early bed mix ... the bass hides too and it seems to me that's gonna be the melody hold on this if you keep the basic concept of the guitars as is ...I'm not sure in my minds ear how you're gonna attack the vocal line tho cus the guitars sorta force you into a corner the way you've got it now - do you generally fill up the song to start and then thin it out according to the vocals?I actually hear the whole call and answer aspect of the guitars to be something that works between passages and maybe during a middle 8 or even an intro/outro thing BUT unless you're really gonna go avante garde and unique on the melody line and delivery - quite "off" from the bed, this could easily get stuck in a rut ...as far as that riff and build is concerned, it seems to ask a question, sorta builds some mystery .... but it doesn't get resolved musically. it sorta sits there continuously asking over and over ...don't know if I articulated that very well but it's what I'm feeling from this. like you had an idea of where to go but didn't get past that initial thought and expand it's area of harmonic potential.which again, just might force your melody into a corner.you obviously write like this, bed track, some fill - and then some vocals? I wrote with a guy for a while like that - he'd send me the bed track with a whole lot of exacting melodic ideas on it - I'd always have to tell him to take it all out and just give me some drums, bass and maybe power and sustain on guitars ... so I had room to find the melody without influence.but that's just one way ... maybe you want to write the melody around those guitar lines?anyway, whether you keep it the same or change it up, I'll be interested in hearing the development of the tune, overall vibe being pretty much where my ears sit most comfortable and all.rock it off ...
Gave up guilt when I left the ol' school girl uniform behind. You know, cute little skirts and knee socks, nuns and rulers and all that.

Sorry you've been battling the flu, Willie. Hope you get over it.Pretty good sound going so far. I'm imagining a singer in a rehearsal room listening to this and trying to improvise a melody (but maybe you have the melody already?). I like the basic drum beat, but would like to hear more bass to fully feel the vibe.I agree with cj that it would be tough to fully realize an independent hook with the guitars spelling out their out motif(s) (especially the one in the right speaker, high register). I'm now curious enough about the vocal you have in mind, so I hope you re-post when you get well and do more work on it!Vince

Vince and Cj... Thanks for the input guys. Well, I've risked my whole career to get Mr. Hein some vocals as I just hate for anyone to think my music sounds ordinary. LOL! Here is an first shot at vocals, some ideas and works in progress. Cj, I was battling with acouple of melodies so I slipped em both into the guitar tracks but didn't highlite either. I don't always write with bedtracks first but sometimes. Recently I've been just going into my studio with an emotion and just start banging away like a sculpter and with a image in his mind and the song develops a life of it's own as it progresses... Anyway heres da tune. I'm calling it I Will Break Free www.williamthomasanderson.com/w2/free.mp3I Will Break FreeWords and Music by William Thomas AndersonCopyright 2008This gilded cageWill not hold meI need just a little more timeJust a little more timeYour little gamesWill not break meWith a little more timeJust a little more time I willOh, oh, I will break freeOh, oh, oh, oh I will break freeOh, oh I break freeYa, ya, ya, ya ya yaMy love you despiseIts why you hate meYou know in a shortYou know in a short time I willYou’re the author of liesThat’s why you hate meYou know in the end timeYou know in your end time I willOh, oh, I will break freeOh, oh, oh, oh I will break freeOh, oh I be freeYa, ya, ya, ya ya yaOh, oh, I will break freeOh, oh, oh, oh I will break freeOh, oh I break freeYa, ya, ya, ya ya ya Cheers lads... ;-) wta

Oooo, dark & heavy, I like it. I think the vocals sound cool but maybe just a bit buried in the mix. Good job dude, Happy Thanksgiving!PS I keep wanting to call you Willie T. because there was an old blues guy here in town named Willie T. In fact, I think every town either has or NEEDS a blues guy named Willie T. !!!

Been wondering where youve been Will.Good track. The vocal ideas are really cool. The music reminds me of some early U2 but darker. This could go well in a soundtrack so keep Film listings in mind. I know your still developing.Bass guitar needs some more presence. If you can pre amp it that might give you a littel punchier tone. If its virtual then just boost the eq and compress. It felt a little "tired" if that makes sense.I hear the bass being a huge part of this music so give that baby some bite!Gald to see you around dude. Get better soon!M~

Version 2 obviously has more song charisma - although in this version the intro is too protracted - and I’m not a fan of vocal melodies which follow the lead guitar unless it’s a calculated feature, so I'm really hoping to hear that the latter is due to replace the former.I’d also like to hear much more creative meter with the verse vocals. Taking liberties with timing is good, clean fun, and with those loose, shuffling drums there’s certainly the space to get away with soaping something below stairs. Making the effort to really feel your way into the beat and its spaces so that it sounds effortless can make the difference between laboured and fresh. The lyrics are not exactly inspirational and I don’t think this is helping.Your backing vocals, however, help to let the chorus soar sufficiently to make language less important than sound, and your voice satisfies well when it seems less preoccupied with being subterranean and sinister.I would say that the transition from verse to chorus really needs, if not a grand gesture then at least an announcement from the drums. The escalating spooky pulses have my favour but not enough to justify the limelight you’ve given them. Make them integrate with the vocals and/or lead guitar before they get ideas above their station and go off and do a solo album.
This post is the kiss of death to your thread.

AND A HAPPY THANKSGIVING!! and yes, too those who know it,I LOVE YOU!wh
