Modern/Pop Rock? Help, I need somebody...

Post by wta » Fri Oct 17, 2008 6:52 pm

I'm working on a colab on the follow tune and I'm trying to define it's catagory and would love some help. Also if you have some feedback on lyric, song structure and production that would be groovy. I produced, recorded and engineered this one from top to bottom but the bulk of the writing was done by my brother... www.williamthomasanderson.com/w2/place_to_be.mp3 You guys are the best... '-) wta

Hi William...I like the sound of this.... some cool guitar work...Small point... it's easier for some of us to give lyric comments if you post lyrics.....That being said... think the hook needs to be accented more... maybe a stop in the music.. say the line, start up again...It might sound a little 80's... but I'm no expert there..... cool tune.... got some good stuff in it........ you might want to vary.... or not us that crash cymbal (so much)....Peace, Geo

Hey WTA,Its recorded well. As geo mentioned, the production sounds a little 80s.Although it really reminds me a lot of The Killers. I'd grab a track from them and try to get a little closer to some of their sounds.

Cheers guys, yes on the cymbels for sure. It is a bit 80's sounding as that guitar work is very a la U2/Edge and that was the heart of the demo I had to work with and needed to run with it for my colab directives but thanks on the kind review of the guitar work, I'm pretty pleased with it too as I don't use delay like that normally for my songs so it was a walk down memory lane and trying out new styles of guitar for me. I agreet that the hook needs a good pitch point that yet is not present... Big thanks... ;-) wta

Hi WilliamOne thought that hit me as soon as I heard this was it might make a good film/TV instrumental without the vocal. Of course, that assumes the production is cleaned up wherever needed. Yea, the cymbals need toning down. You don't have to give up on a vocal version but consider the instrumental. Can you post the backing track without vox? I'm curious... Casey

I liked it but I thought it was a little too much effects on the vocals. The song reminded me a bit of ZZ tops "Tush".
