Not sure why this wasn't forwarded...
Here's the listing that I submitted to...tried to be as Jerry Lee Lewis as possible...was using "Whole Lot of Shakin" as a sort of template. Tried to make the overall sound as 50's as possible i.e. bass being a tad muddy sounding, as it did back then etc...Lyrics that didn't have a whole lot of "meaning" other than "having fun"...so, read the listing, listen to the tune, and give me some ideas as to why it wasn't forwarded....50s ROCK & ROLL SONGS WITH MALE VOCALS a la Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc. are needed by an established Music Publisher in Los Angeles. This company specializes in Film/TV and has signed & secured placements for many TAXI members. These songs should be original, but with a close "soundalike" quality to the songs and style of the referenced artists. Performances and the sound quality must be excellent (solid demo recordings are okay as long as the quality is there). They offer a non-exclusive, 50/50 split deal - you keep your original copyrights. Broadcast quality needed. Please submit one to three songs online or per CD. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI - and must be received by October 28, 2008. TAXI #Y081028RKhttp://www.taximusic.com/stream/181168/Rock%20Your%20World.mp3

Played OK for me Bill, although it doesn't always! This HAS got that Jerry Lee Lewis feel and sound.Don't know about the reason for not forwarding.I notice they say " broadcast quality needed" and don't also say "great home recordings". Sounds OK to me though.
I put the kettle on, it didn't suit me.

dgnats, it's hard to say without referencing songs that were forwarded, but if it were me, i would have forwarded this.It might be worth a call, i heard before where a screener accidentally Returned, instead of Forward.don't cha just hate the "no critiques" listings? You should record this with some live drums, that may have been your downfall here IMO, they sound great but the authenticity is not there, that's the only reason i can think of that it would be returned, everything else sounds right on.Good song.Marc

Re: Not sure why this wasn't forwarded...
Thanks for your thoughts...wish more would chime in though...There's a similar listing coming up, due Dec 11, and I'd like to rectify the problem, if there is one, by then.Wouldn't it be nice, if the "no critique" listings still gave you an inkling of why it wasn't forwarded? Just a simple "not on target for this listing" or "vocals not strong enough"....just throw us a bone here!I will call Taxi, just in case...was even thinking of putting this topic on the Screener Shoutouts thread..Any opinions?Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving, to those who celebrate it!Harry

I THINK the mix might have been a problem. I'm hearing "dull" vocals (and I don't mean the singer's voice). The mix sounds muddy & 'flat' to me. I'm also not sure about the drums - they sound a little cardboardy.Go to this page & listen to the clip of Chantilly Lace, and then listen to your track. The mix is quite different, on CL the vocals are out front, the drums are back, there's no 'muddiness', the vocal is very clear.http://www.amazon.com/Chantilly-Lace/dp/B000VZJMR6JMHO

Re: Not sure why this wasn't forwarded...
One thing I noticed when comparing Chantilly Lace to your song was that Chantilly's rhythm section felt more alive. Chantilly had a faster tempo and it utilized 8th notes as the basic rhythmic unit. The rhythm section in your song, after a promising start and with the exception of occasional tom fills, was pretty much all quarter notes. That left a lot of empty space and created a box-like regularity which detracted from the excitement potential. Some things that might help:Speed up the tempo slightly. You could create an 8th note hi hat pattern, throw in more piano chaos, add more tom fills, vary the snare pattern occasionally, and perhaps add some twangy guitar licks. Then you might want to redo the vocal track and make it a little more hard-edged and gritty. I wasn't paying close attention to the lyrics, so I'll leave that to others to discuss.Anyway, I think the song definitely has potential. Give it another go-around and post it again so we can hear the difference.Richard

Re: Not sure why this wasn't forwarded...
You started off real nice. Then you started singing and playing at a much less enthusiastic level. If you are gonna play like JLL you gotta play and sing like you're tanked up, doing an LA turn around, pocket rockets or something. The energy they had came through the speakers. You turned it down. Now remind yourself that i said that you started off really good. if you could have kept that playing up and came in with a strong voice and much testier, hard core, lyrics and a voice that was more up front and not like you were just singing along; then maybe it'd been forwarded.go drink some jose C and come back with a twitch and just turn on the recorder and just start playing and drinking.Come back the next day, unless you slept in the studio all night, and listen to your attitude in the music. you'll be surprised how different.Get mad, bossy sounding when you sing lik JLL.Doc
