Classic Rock Songs TAXI # D080327RK

Post by leejohnson » Tue Mar 25, 2008 9:11 am

Hi Forum Friends,I have a couple songs I might submit for this one. Any feedback is much appreciated. Are the vox too present? Do I need to provide 2 versions of each, 1 with vox and 1 just trax? Here is the listing, and song links. I did not post lyrics as these are well known cover songs...let me know if those lyrics are needed. Glad to hear your thoughts!COVER ARRANGEMENTS of '60s/'70s - even some early '80s - CLASSIC ROCK SONGS (with vocals) are needed by the Music Supervisor of a major cable TV series. It's a sophisticated comedy/drama about a Los Angeles writer who whose life is filled with raising his 13-year old daughter, trying to rekindle the relationship with his ex-girlfriend, and living the fast lane lifestyle (women, drugs, nightlife, celebrities). The main character is similar to a modern day Jim Morrison. He's in his early 40s, so he grew up on the music of artists such as The Beatles, the Kinks, Bob Dylan, Buffalo Springfield, the Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, the Who, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, Crosby Stills & Nash, Cream, etc. etc. Male or female vocals are OK and all tempos are fine as well. Great performances are absolutely essential. You can take some liberties in your arrangements of popular songs from this era, but be sure to stay true enough to the song that it is recognizable instantly. IMPORTANT!: MAKE SURE YOU OWN THE MASTER RIGHTS to your cover version of the song. Broadcast quality needed - Great sounding home recordings are OK. Please submit one to three songs online or per CD. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS ONLY - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI. As always, you'll be notified by e-mail whether your submissions have been Forwarded or Returned. Submissions must be received no later than Noon PST on Thursday, Mar. 27, 2008. Well, 28 views, no replies, bummer. Oh well, here's what I think i should do...re-mix for sure, to try to tighten up low end and kick with a little EQ, boost and re-EQ bass also, vocals are WAY too present, so lets back those off a bunch, make the overall mix more balanced, try some of the tips I just read in recording mag, and see where I'm at then. I will re-post these changes soon as the chipmunks are finished digitizing!ThanksLee PS if anyone wants to reply with other thoughts or suggestions, that would be great, you won't be interupting this conversation I'm having with myself at all!!! LOL

Hey Lee,Those both sound nice, you're right on with the changes you've mentioned esp. the vocal. Specifically re:the vocals, that is probably the part that could improve the most. Its in key, and on time, but if you've got a few more takes in you to really a squeeze out some more emotion, it might help. Also these are very true to the originals, and the way I read the listing, they're looking for fresh perspectives on these songs, not necessarily carbon-copies. I could be reading too far into it though.Good Luck. I'm working on a few for this one as well will post later this afternoon. Also, you'd probably get more feedback if you posted in Peer To Peer.

Hey Tim, glad to hear from you! I'll look for yours later on. Thanks for your feedback, very helpful. Unfortunately I have to do vocals when family is out of the house...which is usually mornings before I work. I do think these re-mixes are much better...vocals were way too present in those last mixes, my fresh ears told me...Here are my re-mixed versions whihc also have better low end, more bass and drums etc...Honky Tonk Women:http://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_ ... 1Wonderful Tonight:http://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_ ... stream=1My apologies if this is not the correct place to post. I thought here in listings was for specific listing feedback, and peer to peer was for general feedback on songs. Please correct me if I am mistaken. ThanksLee

Lee, I listened to your tunes and I have to concur with my esteemed collegue and fellow bald bastard, Tim. Your tunes are remarkably close to the original versions of the songs. The singing could be more exciting. If the listing is looking for very similar arrangements, you might get forwarded. When I think of different arrangements of cover tunes, I think of REALLY different arrangements. This guy was on American Idol last nite. He brought the house down with a new-fangled version of Billie Jean. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sb05uu7xIYg

Except...his new fangled version was a cover of Chris Cornell's version from last year.

Here's my first crack at this one, a very different version of We Will Rock You by Queen, still needs some lead acoustic at the end which I'll add in the morning. In the meantime I'd love any feedback so far. Mixing tips, mastering tips anything (I'm still way down the curve on the recording end of broadcast quality tracks)We Will Rock You
