Raindrops & Moondrops choosen for Commercial

Post by Bob Mete » Wed Dec 23, 2009 9:07 am

Hi,

My little solo piano piece " Raindrops" has been chosen to be the music for a fragrance TV spot for a huge fashion designer, to start airing in February 2010... For 1 year, worldwide, tv, internet, in-stores, cinema, and PR... and they just added digital downloading on their web site. If you have the time I'd like to share the story:

Thirty five years ago while in college I wrote this piece on my old Fender Rhodes ( Suitcase model).... after joining Taxi in 2007I recorded it and submitted it a number of times to various listings and received about 5 or 6 forwards. A year after the one of the forwards I received a contract from a large UK library.... Well I thought, why not submit it directly to this large West Coast Library that I have another tune signed with ( and the only reason I knew this library existed was because of the TAXI 2007 Rally) Well, they accepted it into their catalogue..... That was last February...

About two weeks before Thanksgiving, I'm flying home from a business trip and when I get home there is a message from the CEO of the west coast library saying they may have a placement please call her right away. So I call and she tells me that Raindrops is at the top of the list for a fragrance promotion... however, the company wants a one year exclusive (only in the fragrance category )... ooops... I tell her it is also signed non exclusively in the UK. So I ask the other library if they will abide by that request... they very politely said they couldn't, which we understood, but had to ask. So I said look I'll write 4 or 5 new stems that are close to the original. ( It's a weird feeling writing something not to plagiarize your own material). So I spent the afternoon writing- which I said I would offer to the library as an exclusive deal in the hopes of making everything happen. Library was happy, and said hold tight. Well about a week goes by and I hear nothing, now I have a heavy travel for business schedule coming up so I down load the files from Logic to a DVD to give to Ryan ( my son who I write with) to take back with him to his studio after Thanksgiving, just in case if I'm in some city and the library needs something done right away. Another week goes by, so I e-mail the library and ask if there is any life in the project left for Raindrops, she replied that she just talked to the music supervisor and should know something in the next week.

So last weekend I'm in the studio working on some other music and snap... pop no computer , ( how do machines know when it is the worst possible time to break down). calls to apple-care, they can't fix it via phone, it needs a service call, closest apple store 80 miles.... they tell me there is a new apple authorize repair now in Charlottesville, give them a call ,they can come out next Thursday. And of course, Monday afternoon at 2 PM I get the call, music supervisor needs the music beds, oh I forgot, they didn't just want the tune, they needed the two tracks one of the underlying arpeggio’s and one with a single note melody.... aah no computer, I tell the library come hell or high water they will have the tracks that evening... So I tear apart the studio grab the computer, monitor etc and drive like an idiot to the service center ( this ones only 15 miles away). luckily, it was just the monitor that blew up, bought an adaptaer to use a pc monitor on the mac, got home built the tracks as requested, sent the files via yousendit to the libray about 8pm that night. Now this is a very lucrative deal and I'm so pleased by it, but besides the financial aspect, one of the most gratifying parts of this whole story was the last e-mail from the CEO of the library, where she said "Bob, thanks for making this so easy"
Well that's the story..... I can't wait to hear and see the commercials.....

A huge thanks to Michael and TAXI for making this all possible......

Bob,

Great story. Congrats on the placement.

Great illustration of how "exclusive" (or at least not doing multiple "non-exclusive" deals with the same track) can make everyone's life a little easier.

Can't wait to hear this on the air.

Bob

I am stressed out just listening to that story. Had me leaning forward so far my nose almost hit the screen.

My wife walked by and said "close your mouth dear".

Very exciting news.

Happy for you,

Paul
