punk return = rock forward ?

this song was returned for a recent punk listing. screener said vocal was too rock like. my mistake was i thought the "teenage angst" lyric qualified it for punk. a tip for others . search the genre thoroughly before you submit. I'm not upset though. live and learn. could this be a rock listing down the line?thanks for the listen

Definitely not punk... It has a retro rock feel so it probably wouldn't work for any modern/alt rock listings either. The vocalist reminds me a little of Cream. The chord pattern is one used a lot in the 60's too. That's not to say it's unique to the 60's, but it gives off that vibe right away.

As you probably figured out by now, the key to most forwards is sounding like one or more of the 'a la' acts listed. So sometimes a really good song can have trouble finding a home. I have a number of generally good rock songs but they don't sound like any particular band or era-- and 'sound like' is pretty comprehensive with production, lyrics, phrasing, construction, vocal style all included in that. So it's hard to get those forwarded.

My suggestion would be to submit this for listing asking for more retro or classic rock sounds. It might get a forward, especially when a wide range is asked for.... Maybe a la Cream, Blind Faith, Yardbirds? (Not 100% sure there)...

One thing I'm trying to get my butt in gear on, is to change from writing whatever and however I want to giving much more consideration to where a song might fit in the 'a la' world. This isn't easy and sometimes I'm content to just let songs out as they are. When I do that, I'm realistic about the challenges. Sometimes, a song written in one style can be re-worked and produced differently to better target listings. (Sometimes not)...

The most important thing (I'm learning the hard way) is that a song is consistent to one era and style. Then when someone is looking for, for example, a song that might have been on the radio in 1968 or 1975, you may have a track to pitch. As you noted, submitting without checking the 'a la' acts listed is not very effective unless you just want some feedback for your $5 on an "S" listing.

Yeah, this has a really great vibe to it, dated yes - but awesome nonetheless!
I hear Sammy Hagar with a touch of Bob Seeger in your vocals.

My problem with this track is the authentic-ness of it.
It seems pretty pre-teen/teenager angsty as you mentioned and your voice (or the singer's) is VERY cleary a full grown man's voice.

With some crunchier guitars, and instead of the reverby/clean tone for the arpeggiated - try some nice smooth distortion - this COULD be brought up to date...but not gonna be punk though, more like pop-rock.

Nice catchy tune though! I liked it.

im listening thru my laptop speakers, but the track (instrumental) do sound current to me, especially because of the high notes you play. and guitar sound is right, tempo is right for fast punk. it may sound really cool is to get a female singer to sing this song. i guess the song will be definitely signed if you get a right singer for it and melody may need more current touch especially the chorus. also melody range stays the same in verse and chorus. chorus need to be bit higher or verse can be bit lower range.

as well as the vocal mismatch, i think you got to pay attention to arrangement more, im talking about dynamics here. it goes loud all the way, you can strip down guitars in some places.

Rock forward... hmmm, im not sure yet. because of the tempo, its not really current Modern Rock (its much slower tempo), its bit faster than Alternative rock either. its more punk pop, powerpop.


i really dig your voice ! its perfect for hard rock, modern rock, etc...

Hey Scotty,

The intro riff is pure punk rock - I mean you could picture Blink 182 laying vox over that - however when you come into the verse, it turns it INSTANTLY into classic rock.

The vocal melodies need to change if you wanted to throw this in the punk rock genre...

I don't get it. Maybe in this day n age punk and punk rock are two different things. Seems like we try to split things up too much these days. They are the same to me. I can think of LOTS of punk rock artists who came out with songs EXACTLY like this one. I don't know what the screener was thinking but IMO you nailed it!
