Hey Ern-Buddy,

Is your driVe still 90% full!!!!!! That's w-a-y too much!!! My drive got past the 66% mark and my newest music software (that pushed me over the edge) wouldn't play right. I added a new drive to my system and everything is mega-sweet!!!

Good Luck, Man!

Hey Allen & Mazz,

I pulled an all-nighter and got all my cues done! I'm so thankful for all your help.

Allen, to answer your question, I've deleted everything off my HD that I never use. It MIGHT be at 66% now, but it's working a lot better!

BTW, did you know I grew up near the mouth of the St. Joseph river? Yup, good ol' St. Joe!

Best Regards,

Ern 8-) :)

That's a good point about the hard drive capacity. Remember that window's (and all computers) extend your RAM by creating virtual swap space on your hard drive that "acts" like RAM. But it's really just swapping out huge chunks of data between your hard drive when your RAM is running out, which it will be anytime you're doing hard core music stuff. (unless your on 64 bit which still isn't really here for all of us, yet)

On window's the hard drive space that your "swap file" commenders is pretty large and window's really starts to freak if it gets low. So if your your drive is low on space and your drive is real time processing audio streamed from that disk and that same disk is serving up the os and that same disk is streaming your samples and that same disk is processing your plugins, you can guess why that poor thing stutters, which then cuases the entire machine to just crash.

Glad you got them done!

But as a suggestion, when you can, try to get some extra internal or really fast firewire external drives to separate all this madness. And adding more RAM will also make you feel much better about yourself (no matter whether your 64 bit or not) Windows takes a lot of RAM just to work right, even if your all the way back on XP (which doesn't really suck at all compared to some of their future iterations)

We're talking about a 300 dollar upgrade total, which might be impossible right now, but at least it's a number you can keep in mind to shoot for.

Another option, if you have one, is to giga connect another machine and use that machine's hard drive to take some of the load off your primary one. You probably already have some sort of router that supports gigabit and it's not has complicated as it sounds. Although I'm not sure if Pro tools allows you to rely on this sort of tech.

Again, way to go in getting it done!
B

Allen, this will give you a laugh --- I'm already in the Western Michigan University music school Hall of Fame! I've been sending the former orchestra conductor (who is the alumni chairman) CDs of my works recorded by European orchestras, scores, orchestra premieres etc., all my "accomplishments" for years, and have a separate showcase for all this in the new music building's Hall of Fame!

Awhile ago, I got an email from Dr. Doubleday, and he said "John, I've been trying to find out what year you graduated so that I can put that in your Hall of Fame case. What year was that?"

I wrote back, "Carl, the reason you can't find it is --- I DIDN'T GRADUATE! I dropped out in 1975 to play rock & roll 'cause I was sick of the academic snobs, especially the students that looked down on us rockers." He replied "John, I totally understand that. A lot of people in the music department ARE snobs. Good for you!" What a great guy!

Ironically, a few years back I applied to finish my B.A. at the university, where I was about 13 credit hours short of graduation. The dean of admittance wrote me back and told me that I would have to start again as a SOPHOMORE! --- F^*# them!

"Wise guy, "wise ass," doesn't matter. Now I officially proclaim myself:

THE DUNCE! Here's me with my new dunce cap:

I just looked in my "ProTools for Dummies" book, and the author states in black and white that you can either save PT files as Wav files or Aiff files when you create a new session! DOH! Yet, I opened a "new" file specifying Aiff and 48/16, twice. The computer crashed. I gave up.

Soooo, how do I convert 96/24 wav files to 48/16 aiff files in PT? Is it possible?

The Dunce  :geek:

Update: I keep trying to open a "new" file in PT @ 48/16. The computer crashes, over and over.

NOW I remember why I've always opened new files @ 96/24 (other than they sound better): Even when the computer was working properly, any new lower res files ALWAYS crashed! A year or two ago, I just gave up and accepted that any new file that I make will have to be 96/24.

I'm thinking of purchasing PT's most recent update, but I hate to put it on this old goofy computer! Anyone want to buy a wonderful early 70's Fender Deluxe Reverb amp? Seriously. I'm putting it on Craigslist this afternoon. If you're in the SoCal area, let me know!

And so it goes,

Ern 8-) :)

LOL! I actually told the publisher "Give me a 1/4" or 1/2" tape, a de-magnitized razor blade, a cutting block, and we're good to go!

Yea, I'll admit I'm a dunce about "transfer technology," but I'm a whiz at combining sample computers and making music. Isn't that the point? How can you put down a composer, who spent his whole life as a musician and engineer, for not understanding the technology that 21-year-olds understand, because they grew up with it? As I said, "I'm trying -- I'm trying to learn!" ;)
