Here is another good one, I submitted a song to a metal listing the screener tells me it is pop/punk. So I submit that song to a pop/punk listing, now the SAME (same ID#) screener tells me it is metal.

I think, in that case, the problem is that you're too awesome.

I really think we're caught in a bottleneck. Too many submissions, too few opportunities, and the reality is that, while your song (and my song) may indeed be excellent (or not), they can only forward X% of the submissions and they liked somebody else's better.

Their obligation to be screeners can butt up against their obligation to be critiquers. I mean, probably not too many of them are song doctors so much as people who TAXI thinks have an ear for what will best fly in the marketplace. And I guess I kind of want to let them off the hook for coming up with a reason you forwarded that other guy's song but not mine. You liked his better, I get it.

Basically, the person you had a crush on can try to let you down easy with these extracontextual reasons why they can't date you, but you're probably going to be pretty hard to convince that they're just not attracted to you, compared to that other person, because, well, that's really what's most likely going on.

And the tough part is that if they were all particuarly great song doctors, we'd all still be stuck in that same bottleneck, because we'd all be getting better, but the number of opportunities likely wouldn't increase, and the screeneers would just have to raise their standards.

Until then, I'm stuck with the alternate feedback of songs that don't sound similar enough to what's on the charts and songs that sound too similar. Bouncing from pillar to post am I. See you on the front lines.

(And no, I don't mix metaphors like that in my songwriting.)
