Received an unsolicited review

Post by Lakim » Wed Sep 22, 2010 1:33 pm

Has anyone here ever received an unsolicited review with one of your submissions? I do not request reviews, as I'm frankly just not interested in changing my music for anyone else's purpose. I'm successful enough with what I do that I fortunately don't have to do this. I don't write specifically for tv/film. (w/one exception, I wrote a song inspired by my favorite tv show.) In general, I submit my pre-existing songs when I see a fit for them, and that's it.

I ask this because I received a detailed review of a submission today, which I did not ask for. And hopefully, I didn't get charged for it.

On a separate subject, about the content of the review... I find it funny that the reviewer gave solid 8s across everything, including engineering, performance, etc., when these tracks were produced and engineered by Grammy nominated engineers and producers who usually only work with major label artists. And some of these songs have already been used in tv/film, including on mtv/vh1 shows. I'm guessing that the straight-8 marks are just a sign of laziness and desire to get through the review, but who knows?*

*This may be the other reason I don't request reviews. ;)

Some listings provide critiques (that are included for your $5) and some listings say 'No Critiques'. That said many reviewers try to give you a little something to go on when they return a tune even tho' the listing may have said 'No Critiques'.

That's a great ice breaker. You should use that as your introduction whenever you meet someone new in the music industry.

Actually... you could bring the bravado down a notch. There's dozens and dozens of forum members with lots of music in film and television. No biggie. The hype card isn't necessary... kind of puts us all at a distance from you. We're all on the same side here. 8-)

I'm thinking that maybe you haven't spent the time to read and understand how TAXI works. But you must be so busy cashing royalty checks that you don't have time to do that.

Some submissions come with critiques, some don't. For many folks, the critiques are a large part of the value of TAXI and that is what has helped many over the bar that you obviously have already overcome with your awesomeness.

So the critique was not unsolicited, it was included as part of the submission fee, you did not pay extra for it, which you would have found out if you had paid attention to the TAXI materials that you receive when you become a member. You don't have to read the critiques and, of course, if you already have the awesome success with your music as you say, you probably don't even need to be bothering yourself with TAXI, so why are you?

Cheers,

As others said, there is a $5 submission fee for all submissions. Some listings are Y/N meaning no critique, others are "S" which means there is a critique.

However, you always have the option on an "S" listing of un-checking the box "Critique Requested" and therefore not getting one. If you did un-check that box and got the review anyway, certainly no harm done.

I hope you'll lighten up on the attitude. Maybe Taxi is not right for you and you should request a refund, especially if you are so incredibly successful on your own.

Casey

C'mon guys-

I'm starting to feel bad now...

I paid twenty bucks for a custom critique and I didn't even get a forward out of it!

How does a guy succeed around here?

You probably should continue to request them, because you apparently do not know the success level of many of the screeners at Taxi... You rambled off the credits of the producer and engineer of your project but...

...As far as the all 8's... POSSIBLY the people you should be mad at is the "Label Level" Producer and Engineer for only making you a recording that is an 8 on a scale of 1-10... has that thought even crossed your mind? IF you truly are an objective musician/songwriter... this thought should be a reflex action as well as the thought you had... that the screener is bad. It is perfectly possible you got sub par work from your guys and now you got a reality check... ;)

The reviews (critiques) are there to give you someones honest opinion of your submission. Most people find it helpful, (like me) although there have been occasions when the critique was obviously not the best critique that someone has given and perhaps it was a rushed critique. The screeners do try to be objective, but I am sure they have their personal preferences that would appeal to them more... thus get better ratings. Also, all 8s tells me the screener thought the music, performance, songwriting, engineering, etc... was all solid. If he put all 10s then he would have had to thought it was AWESOME... Grammy award winning.... etc... I find it difficult to believe that you handed Taxi that level of professionalism.. after all, that "Label Level Producer"... IF he thought your music was Grammy award winning he would have taken you under his wing and you wouldn't even be here...

Also, no one around here is going to admire you for your.. "Won't change attitude"... some people went through that when they were younger when they THOUGHT they knew it all. People around here love many different styles of music.. so we play many different styles. Does that make us sell outs?... contrary to what I THINK you would say to us.. it makes us enlightened imho.

You are on a forum with a bunch of grownups... try to act like one please... everyone. :)
