Platinum Hit?

Post by guitarhacker » Thu Jun 02, 2011 7:50 pm

Is anyone watching the Kara D show called Platinum Hit on the bravo network?

I happened to catch it the other night.... cruising the channels and Kara was on the screen.... I said ...whoa.... what is this? So I hung out a few and discovered that this show is apparently kinda like American Idol, but for songwriters. They wrote a hook based on an idea given to them by the judges.... Kara is the top judge. The 4 top hook writers chose 2 more people each for a collaboration team to write a song for the hook in 8 hours and compete....

One of the writers deemed by the judges to be the weakest one was sent packing at the end of the show.... from what I saw, looks like new collab teams for next week. Might be a show to look for on Wed nites.

According to Kara, the song is the important thing, not the performance. As a matter of fact she kinda ripped into the low scoring team for trying to get a poorly written song past the judges using emotion in the performance instead of writing a good song that could stand on it's own. (refreshing to see that comment from her)

In the course of commenting on the tunes, the judges were giving some good advice to the writers.

Anybody else see this show?

I could imagine they had lots of intense discussions about what to edit in and out of what we see on screen.
I hope that we can see more of the judges talking amongst themselves about how they made their decisions.

It moved too fast for my aged brain. Wish I could DVR it.

One thing I think it does is to take the mystic off of what it means to be a songwriter today.
And I don’t mean wanting to be one. ;)

Maybe they should have named the show, "So You Think You Want To Be A Songwriter?"

Tune in tomorrow night to find out.

Of course, since it is a reality show, to attract the most viewers, it has to have drama between the contestants. If it was really about songwriting, they would have a really, really small audience of a few hundred die hard songwriters.

I was thinking they had something like this on CMT awhile back that I seem to recall....vaguely.

I would love to see and hear the discussion of the judges in the back room as well. To me, that would be the most interesting part.

There are clips on the website, but it's way too frustrating to attempt to watch. Who thought two-minute clips interrupted by thirty second commercials was a good idea? (damn thing starts over every time my browser breaks, and Chrome jes' hates Flash) Not available on demand from my friendly neighborhood cable company either, but I'll see a re-broadcast of last week's first show along with tonight's new episode. I suspect they'll be so worried about appealing to a general audience, it won't be at all interesting for us. Jes' looking for pop hits doesn't interest me as much as other forms of commercial writing, jes' sayin. (not that I'd mind so much havin' a hit, heh. I'm jes not that mainstream, most mornings)

I caught part of an episode when I was on the treadmill one day last week.

I liked the fact that it focused on pure SONGWRITING. But I didn't like the typical reality TV show dramatics. Kara looks beautiful as always. :D
