Do All Macbook Pros run on 64bit mode??

Post by k o star » Fri Jun 10, 2011 11:10 pm

Can All Macbook Pros startup & run on 64bit mode??
Or is it just the 15" & 17" Quad ones?
I feel a need to start running in 64bit mode for the stuff I'm doing these days.. so I think I'l need to upgrade soon..
& I saw that the 13" MB Pros Dual are going for ard $1200 upward..
I'm wondering if these 13" Dual ones are restricted to running only in 32 bit or do they all start up & run in 64bit mode for Logic, PTLS & Everything else?..

Thanks..

I think all modern macs can run in 64 bit mode. I'm sure there's a Mac pro audio forum out there that would have the answer. Or call apple.

All Macs can, starting with 10 point something OS, think it was called Leopard, and if it came pre-installed. Older hardware might prevent you from running in 64-bit mode on a newer OS.

Not All MacPros can run in 64Bit mode. Here is a list:

Also you can check your machine by entering the following command in Terminal (be careful- you can really mess things ups in the terminal):

ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi

It will return either “EFI32″ or “EFI64.” If you get EFI64, you can run in 64bit

Kayle, your post seems to be missing the list? :D

Damn! Hate it when that happens. Should post anything before my first bowl of Lucky Charms! Thanks Mojo -

Here is the list. Also, here is a list to check if you have a 64bit processor. Basically, core 2 duo and newer.

It seems like all MacBook Pros can run in 64 bit since early 2008.

So, my MacBook Pro is a 2007 Model 3,1 which uses the Core 2 Duo, (64bit chip), but I can't boot into 64bit because Apple doesn't support 64bit firmware on this machine. Missed it by that much.

But I can, and do on my 27" iMac, and it works great!

Thanks Kayle.. According to the article & list, it seems that all the new Macbook Pros should be able to run 64bit mode?
Meaning that if I am to buy the latest version of Macbook Pro now, regardless of 13" or 15", it should run in 64bit mode as long as it's the newer versions? That's if my assumption accurate..

Also, do U know what's the diff. between 2GHZ, 2.3 & 2.7 GHZ?
& Quad processor means I can have up to 16G of RAM right? & Dual processor means max 8G RAM..?

Hi Kel -

(I edited my post above while you were posting - so see if there is some more info that helps.)

Those are clock speeds - so think it of kind of like your water faucet. Where 2, 2.3 and 2.7 are the size of the faucet. The bigger the faucet, the more water you can get out at once. Now, the difference between 2 and 2.7 is fairly small and I 'm not sure that you will really notice it. Also, it is important to remember that a lot of things go into the speed of your mac. So, a faster clock speed does not necessarily mean a faster machine.

The Quad/duo processor doesn't have anything do to with RAM, necessarily. Quad chips have 4 (quad) processors on one chip, Dual has 2. So, if you have 2 Quad chips, you really have 8 processors running. In very simple terms, it's like having 8 computers running under the hood. The MacPros have 6 core chips, so you can get two of them and have 12 processors running.

The amount of RAM you can install is determined by 2 things:

1) how many slots you have - MacBooks have 2, iMacs have 4, some MacPros have 16...
2) How big each RAM chip the computer can recognize. They make 16gig Ram chips, but I can't put that in my Macbook Pro - it won't see it. So, I am limited to 8 gigs (2x4gig chips) My iMac can "see" 8 gig chips so I can put 4 in for a total of 32Gigs

Now, how much each app can "see" or address is limited by the 32 bit/64 bit thing. With 32 bits, you can only see 4 GB of RAM - no matter how much you have installed. So, if you put in 16 gigs of RAM, but you are on 32 bit machine, Logic will only see 4 gigs. in 64 bit, Logic can see all 16 gigs (of course, the system uses some of that RAM, so it can't use all 16 gigs)

OK - have I talked too much? Hope this helps.

Cheers -
