Beatles Influenced Return - Disappointed. Thoughts?

Post by Casey H » Thu Oct 13, 2011 12:02 pm

The Listing
BEATLES INFLUENCED CLASSIC ROCK ARTISTS/BANDS and SONGS needed by a very credible and well-respected Independent Label for a compilation CD, to be distributed both nationally and internationally. ORIGINAL SONGS ONLY! They're looking for songs "influenced by" the Beatles - NOT covers or sound-alikes. Your music can range from the early Mersey-beat era of "Please, Please Me" to the Psychedelic period of songs like "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds" or the later, classic Rock sound of "Yesterday" and "Let It Be". Image is not important here - the songs are the main thing!! Vocal and demo presentation must be top-notch! Please submit two to three songs online or per CD, include lyrics, photo and bio. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by the owner of the listing company and must be received no later than Tuesday, September 20, 2011. TAXI #S110920RK

My review was by screener #79, which a number I think I recognize. I don't this screening was by the owner of the company ?? :|

The song: http://www.taxi.com/caseyh "Am I Still In Your Heart"

The Review
(All 8’s except 7’s in Lyrics and Marketability)
On Target For Listing

GENERAL
The arrangement is extremely well-constructed, the vocal sounds relaxed and expressive, and the hook is impossible to resist. The lyric seems very sincere, however, I can't escape the feeling I've heard similar sentiments expressed in nearly identical fashion a few too many times before. Is there a way to bring out a bit more of your own unique character and personality in the story you're telling? I believe this will allow your "voice" as a songwriter to seem a little more distinctive.

OVERALL COMMENTS
Hey Charles - Thanks so much for submitting. In terms of style, this reminds me of the ballads Lennon and McCartney were writing around the time of Rubber Soul, although the lyrical content isn't as colorful as any of their material. Is there a way for you to personalize the lyric? It's my feeling it needs to reflect a bit more of your own unique character and personality. Sorry I won't be able to forward you this time around. Best of luck with all future songwriting efforts.

MAIN REASON FOR RETURN
Lyrical theme and imagery aren't quite compelling enough for their requirements.

When I wrote this for the listing (a re-write from an old version), I allowed the lyrics to be fairly cliché and trite because many Beatles songs were. The listing mentioned songs like “Please Please Me” and “Yesterday” which are simple like that. I’m a little surprised that the return was for lyrics when so much else is right here. I do see how this is a very high bar listing—for a label compilation CD, not a music library. That could be a factor.

What do you all think? :?:

Best,
:D Casey

Hey Casey. I think he was spot with reference to rubber soul in sound. I cant say I felt like there was anything wrong with it. Sounded pretty spot on as he thought it was. I didnt think there was anything wrong with the lyrics and the sound/melody is fab. The only part I thought I liked but didnt like how the instrumental break down was done with acoustic guitar taken the lead. I would of preferred to hear an electric guitar/george harrison with a bit of dirt in it taking the lead there. Other than that I think it merited a forward but again it's all subjective.

Stephen :)

Personally Casey, I love this song. Particularly the chorus. I've always been more of a melody man than someone who pays attention to the lyrics in songs so I didn't notice anything lyrically that didn't work for me.

i still say an electric piano in there would work a real treat in place of the acoustic piano. And maybe a little bit more dirt! That's just me though.

It's a really good song.

I could definitely see a different approach to the instrumental. I went for an "And I Love Her" instrumental vibe but it might be too 'early Beatles' for the rest. My impression is it wouldn't have mattered as far as the return-- that seemed to be all about lyrics.

So.... I'm licking my wounds  but still pleased because with the very positive review this got (Lots of 8's and nice comments), I'm hoping a solid library will pick it up as a Beatles knock off. That's the good part of Taxi. You write or re-write for listings and the gift can keep on giving.

Best,
:) Casey

Great song and production Casey!
And IMO the lamest return in the history of Taxi. If he thinks that the music is that good it should be forwarded. Simple as that.
The Taxi screening process is flawed. Screeners like this one play God with your music by dangling a carrot in front of your face by telling you that your hook is irresistible and your production is great and then yank it away and pretend that they are trying to help you. And then they are hidden by a number and not held accountable in any way. Pure BS!
And the whole "At least you got some good comments" is BS too. Screw the comments; this song should be a forward.
The good news is that song will probably end up in a movie someday.

I got sent on a course once about project management. One of the things they taught was the "tape technique". This is that when giving bad news always start off with some good. This apparently gets the persons "good tape" running so when the bad news is given it is softer.

The other thing they taught is by overdoing it - adding too much good news vrs the bad news - might cause hidden rebellion

I personally hated the class but it explained many things I see in 'services' businesses that have staff / rely on moral and stuff

I don't see Taxi as doing this per say, but it could explain why (I too) get the "why couldnt they just send it on!" kinda reaction sometimes hey

I agree with the screener. Beatles, four dudes, would not let another member sing lyrics that they see dis-empower a member as much as this does. Imagine four blokes all making tunes and one of them wanted to sing "please tell me I'm still in your heart" - almost a begging sentiment to all the lines, please -, he would get ragged at a lot and told to buy the beers in all night!

They were lads from Liverpool, one visit to the place and you will know what I mean ! : )

all imo of course

Even though I'm disappointed and wish it was forwarded, here are my thoughts:

We really don't know the objective of the listing party. It says they want to issue a compilation CD but it's not clear to what purpose. To sell CD's? To market songs for film/TV? That could explain a lot. If this were a film/TV compliation CD, I would be much more upset since I don't think the lyrics are at all a show stopper as a Beatles influenced song for film/TV.

What I'm reading from the screener is more that the lyrics and music don't match as far as the Beatles TIME PERIOD the music best represents. If it's Rubber Soul, the lyrics to many songs were much more compelling. However, that wasn't true for all songs- some were still a bit trite. Lennon's lyrics were usually much more interesting than Mac's.

If the song is that good, I'll get it signed by a solid music library in short order. And if not for Taxi's recent Beatles-influenced listings, I wouldn't have re-written it and had it re-sung/re-mixed. So it should eventually be a win-win and Taxi will still get an assist.

Keeping the skin thick,

No worries, sedge... Didn't take it that way at all. All honest opinions are worthwhile, agree or not. :D
