Elser,

If music is our business then listening to an eclectic mix of music is a prerequisite to being able to write something new. Whip me, Beat me, Wrap me chains and make me listen to music......

It is a hard job.

I do find myself listening to talk radio frequently or audio books on road trips. But.....I still listen to music like a maniac. I always find something that sparks my own creativity. I've always listened to a healthy dose of the Beatles, Stones and Police as long as I can remember. But recently I've been indulging in Good Old War, The Head and the Heart, Blind Pilot, Boxer Rebellion, Band Of Horses, Avett Brothers, Young The Giant and Ryan Adams. Love the new Death Cab album too. What can I say, I'm a sugary music junkie :D Did I mention Phoenix.....don't get me started!
Haven't listened to much classical music though. Apparently my musical brain still acts like a 20 year old ;)

Other than peer-to-peer I don't listen to music for research. I did have to research the occupy wall st. thingy, because my dad made some outerspace comments about them, and I haven't been following the news much (I avoid television because I have a tendency to argue with it), anyway I've been listening to some Noam Chompsky lectures. That inspired me to listen to a little Leonard Cohen, mainly the song "Democracy",lol. Before that I think it was Natacha Atlas and Franco Battiato. I listen more for experimentation and inspiration. I tried the billboard 100 thing or whatever it was, I wasn't inspired and can't imagine myself writing those kinds of songs anyway.
I see someone listed Alison Krauss twice in their post, does that have any significance?lol!

Just wanna note that I get inspiration from books and movies as much as music, and lately, even a few Facebook posts. I've developed a kind of secondary awareness for underscore and song-score while watching television. None of that is strictly recreational, (not anymore) but it depends on how one defines "recreation". (there's more to the concept than fun; it's partly a matter of decompression) I'm really kind of always writing, now, and may have to take up trancendental meditation in order to stop...unless there's medication for that.

I don't listen to music in the car (I listen really deeply and can't concentrate on music and driving at the same time), or work for that matter. Music gets all of my attention or none of it. I listen for music primarily for pleasure because tend to learn more by listening for enjoyment that by research.

As far as things in particular that I listen to, I've catalogued a big chunk of it here:

Are far as stations I listen to:

Internet (aol radio)
Abstract Beats
Ambient
New Indie 1st
Nature Sounds(Not quite silence, but it's nice at times)

Car (Sirius/xm)
All over the place, but I seem to get stuck on 40's on 4 quite often.
Also Chill is nice, but man do they over do the bass sometimes....

(Does Pensado's Place count? It is not music but it is about mixing music)

I've been listening to a lot of Electronica lately, BT, Tiesto etc... but I also have stations for Pat Metheny, The Foo Fighters, Bach, Neil Young, Radio Head, The Beatles, Rhianna, Gregorian Chant and many more.

I'm also a huge Kevin Gilbert fan but I didn't know about the Taming Of The Shrew album, I'll have to check that out! I love the Thud album and Toy Matinee.

I never listen to Abba, some of you will understand why.
