EZ or Superior drummer are great. I've even taken samples from real drum sessions and dragged them into superior drummer. Of course you lose some of the humanizing effects they've automated in but the point is, you're not limited to the sounds within your libraries. Or you can drag in a live snare and layer it over their snare and mix to taste. The advantage to midi is that the possibilities are endless. The disadvantages is that the possibilities are endless and sometimes rather than working your craft, you end up endlessly searching for new sounds, combinations, etc. to create a new vibe.
However, every once in a while when you get a little extra cash, hire a studio and a live drummer. I still say that there is no true replacement unless you're really just mixing the drums way in the back as a feel or pulse.
