The music just doesn't Bond!

Post by davekershaw » Sun Nov 16, 2008 7:30 am

Just seen the new Bond movie, and was really disappointed with the theme music. It usually captures the whole essence of the film, and is also used as incidental music and for the closing credits, but not this one.I thought "You know My Name" was passable, but certainly not among the greats. Seems they lost something after John Barry, although I think David Arnold has done a generally good job since.I always look forward to hearing the choice of artist and the music. The producers usually take a great deal of care with it, as they do when selecting a new actor for the part of Bond.It just seems like they slapped any old track in there this time.Good film though!End of review!Any favourite Bond Themes anyone?Click the subject line to enter the poll. There are some terrific ones, and it's hard to choose, but I'm going for "All Time High".

Thats funny because I liked the theme tune but didn't like the movie, I thought it was the most boring Bond film I've ever seen.

It certainly wasn't up there with any of the greats.I liked the film, but Casino Royale (imo) was much better, and promised better things this time round.Maybe the formula's just getting too tired.

Maybe should have made an exception and included it as a choice. Terrific song!Update: Live and Let Die's out there in front!

Brilliant thread!I'm genuinely shocked (actually bordering on agog) that no-one has picked Nobody Does it Better (The Spy Who Loved Me), sung by Carly Simon! Fantastic song in so many ways My second vote would be You Only Live Twice (Nancy Sinatra) - it epitomises the Bond feel to me: mysterious, exotic, and that huge descending string riff is just iconic.I agree the new one is not all that - a bit of a let down for a Bond tune. But I actually found You Know My Name to be a really interesting track.

I really wish John Barry would come back to score another Bond movie, I'm tired of David Arnold's work, its always such generic 'bond music' but without any of the original hooks and classic motifs that Barry always created. Although, if the Bond movies get any more boring than the new one they might as well ask Kenny G to do the next theme! My most hated Bond themes:1. Die Another Day2. All time high (sorry dave!)3. You know my name - sounds like a Gillette commercial !

When did the first "James Bond" theme appear?"BA-da-da-DA-da-da-da---BA-da-da-DA-da-da-da---BA-da-Dyaaaa!" with all the french horns and brass? That gets my vote!Although the "Goldfinger" song by Shirley Bassey is SO over-the-top, it sure is memorable!I can't vote yet, until I find out what movie the original theme was in!Ern
