Hi IbanezSorry I didn't answer right away, I had my Wednesday night gig. Yeah, like Glen and squids said, I meant the label. Almost every great jazz musician from the fifties recorded on Blue note at one time or the other. The recordings are flawless and it's getting really hard to find original copies. A friend of mine recently found over twenty of them in MINT condition at a garage sale here in Montreal. He was overjoyed, to say the least. Even in the early eighties, my theory instructor told us all in class to comb the used record stores in Seattle and buy up any that we could find. If you're into jazz, as I know you are, you can't go wrong. They are all fantastic! If you inherited any, I'm jealous... but happy for you! I have some old records from my Dad's collection that I really cherish.Mewman

I got an early Father's Day present, a USB turntable so I can start transferring songs to mp3 on my computer (for my iPod, etc). I have hundreds of vinyl albums, in excellent condition, sitting unused for many years now. There were times years ago where I would buy a whole album, just to get the one song I loved. I would make "mix" cassettes for the car, much like we do with CDs or iPods today. To re-purchase everything on CD or by download isn't always affordable and some things you can't even find anymore... So, a little at a time, I'm gonna transfer stuff.I know the sound quality won't be perfect-- I may get some of those crackles and pops you get with vinyl, but it sure beats not listening to the songs at all... I also have a bunch of 45's!Oh, and Chits... Separating the seeds on the album covers were a big part of the experience, definitely!! Casey

I've loved his weird stuff long before "O Brother Where Art Thou?" and "Ghost World" came out. Sounds like a fun, fun project. Good luck with it!I'm actually a late-comer to Skip James. I came to him from John Fahey and Leo Kottke but since I found out about him it's the only style I want to play in the house. I even bought a metal bodied Resonator guitar to get a more bluesy sound. I just love playing Vestibule to my baby. He jiggs around to it like a crazy.I think that Country-Blues sound is long overdue for a dubbin'.Gotan Project did it with tango, I'll do it with Skip...that's my thinking. BTW ya'll. My Mum had an original vinyl copy of Jimmy Smith's the Cat which was sonically better than any Jazz CD I bought. It even had a scratch which skipped in time to the beat....nice!

Thanks squids for the postOh the good old days Now that I'm in my 50s it's getting harder and harder to read the print on the CD jackets. I enjoyed the old covers almost as much as the music it's self. There was something special about taking it out of the cover. You handled it like it was a gold disk careful not to get oily fingers or to accidentally scratch It. I would sit and listen until it was over. It wasn't just background music it was an experience. Seen this before? ::June 2008MUSIC INDUSTRY UNVEILS NEW PIRACY-PROOF FORMAT ...!A BLACK PLASTIC DISC WITH GROOVES ON IT. Music bosses have unveiled a revolutionary new recording format that they hope will help win the war on illegal file sharing which is thought to be costing the industry millions of dollars in lost revenue. Nicknamed the 'Record', the new format takes the form of a black, vinyl disc measuring 12 inches in diameter, which must be played on a specially designed 'turntable'. "We can state with absolute certainty that no computer in the world can access the data on this disc," said spokesman Brett Campbell. "We are also confident that no-one is going to be able to produce pirate copies in this format without going to a heck of a lot of trouble. This is without doubt the best anti-piracy invention the music industry has ever seen." As part of the invention's rigorous testing process, the designers gave some discs to a group of teenage computer experts who regularly use file swapping software such as Limewire and gnutella and who admit to pirating music CDs. Despite several days of trying, none of them were able to hack into the disc's code or access any of the music files contained within it. "It's like, really big and stuff," said Doug Flamboise, one of the testers. "I couldn't get it into any of my drives. I mean, what format is it? Is it, like, from France or something?" Invention: Teenage computer hackers struggled to access the new disc. In the new format, raw audio data in the form of music is encoded by physically etching grooves onto the vinyl disc. The sound is thus translated into variations on the disc's surface in a process that industry insiders are describing as 'completely revolutionary' and 'stunningly clever.' To decode the data stored on the disc, the listener must use a special player which contains a 'needle' that runs along the grooves on the record surface, reading the indentations and transforming the movements back into audio that can be fed through loudspeakers. Even Shawn Fanning, the man who invented Napster, admits the new format will make file swapping much more difficult. "I've never seen anything like this," he told reporters. "How does it work?" As rumours that a Taiwanese company has been secretly developing a 12 inch wide, turntable -driven, needle-based, firewire drive remain unconfirmed, it would appear that the music industry may, at last, have found the pirate-proof format it has long been searching for.--- - until next timefrodo
