Best Song Opening Lines

Post by Casey H » Mon Dec 03, 2007 3:38 am

I'm not sure if we had a thread like this before. What do you think are some of the best opening lines you've heard for a song... the kind that reel you right in? Not talking whole song lyrics- just those first few phrases...Some that come to mind for me:Please allow me to introduce myself, I'm a man of wealth and taste - Rolling StonesIt's getting to the point where I'm no fun anymore - Crosby, Stills, and NashI would dial your numbers just to hear listen to your breath - Melissa Etheridge Casey

Since I dig 'story songs', here are two of my picks:Taxi:It was rainin' hard in 'FriscoI needed one more fare to make my nightA lady up ahead waved to flag me downShe got in at the lightOde to Billy Joe:It was the third of JuneAnother sleepy dusty delta dayI was out chopping cotton And my brother was bailing hayI'll add a Christmas tune in addition to the two songs.....Merry Christmas From the Family:Mom got drunk and Dad got drunkAt our Christmas partyWe were drinking champagne punchAnd homemade eggnogThese were not really so much 'opening lines' (more like an opening verse) but good 'story openers.'

The devil went down to Georgia, he was looking for a soul to steal.

You know, I went hunting for those stand out openers. There were a few that have already been posted that I'd list, if you consider 'best' being eloquent and insightful. For just sheer impact, I have to add what might be my all time favorite opener..Take this job and shove it...eloquently penned by the esteemed Mr. David Allan CoeIt's common man country dosed with rock-n-roll rebellion. It's a stand out slap across the head opener that is accessible to probably 90% of the world. And there's the two line opener that draws such a complete visual that you can almost instantly taste it...On a long and lonesome highway, east of Omaha. You can listen to the engine moaning out its one lone song(not positive Seger wrote it but it's one of the most visual lyrics I've ever seen. Great, great songs.)This too is one of those lists that could possibly go on forever. I know they're very busy and all but I think it would be interesting to see how the screeners would answer this question.
