Casey:I added a link in my original post for some information on the different types of injections. After trying physical therapy and a few different holistic remedies ( that gave me no relief) I finally, after 2 months of torture, decided to try the injections. Even after about 5 visits of injections I continued to go to Physical Therapy and water walk at the pool. Icing is also your friend!Everyone will give you their version of the best remedy and advice and no two will match. This is definitely something to take seriously and seek out the remedy that is best for you.Every case is different. My discomfort started as mild lower back pain and then gradually started to travel all the way down the right side all the way to my foot. I had intense pain in the buttocks, the hip, my calf, and the shin area.I have much more as far as horror stories pertaining to this problem but I won't bore (Scare?) you.It definitely was the worst four to 5 months of my life, bar none.Do some research and weigh the possibilities that fit your discomfort/pain level. Then look at your options and what you feel good about as potential remedy is concerned. DO NOT let it get worse like mine did. Also give this a reading too http://apnews.myway.com//article/200703 ... 00.htmlTom

Sorry to hear about this, Casey. Pain can sure bring you down. Sounds like you are doing some good things and there's some good advice here too. I highly recommend massage therapy with someone who works the acupunture pressure points as well as working the muscles to release tension and help you relax. You may be able to find someone who will come to your home to do it, or take a cab to the office so you don't have to drive. Just look for registered massage therapists in your area. typically when we have an issue like this the rest of the body becomes stressed in dealing with the pain & everything gets off kilter. Massage helps you rebalance. Take good care, warmlyHummin'bird

I don't think it's covered at all by medical insurance, but when you hurt enough you stop caring about that.I'm keeping my sense of humor though I'm down... This week I will go to the physical therapist, the chiropractor, the massage therapist, the pain relief doctor, and the accupunturist... Oh, and I will drink some Scotch each night... Busy week!Casey

I'm sorry to hear of your plight, Casey...I have to say, though, Sciatica sounds like a great name for a song/band/movie. Yeah... a movie about some creature that sucks the spines out of people and leaves them a mass of flesh jello...Okay - I've worked on too many effects flicks... Get better!

I can empathize. I have had the lower back problems you describe. I found a chiro to be useful in those instances. In my thirties I was an exercise freak and a bit reckless about it sometimes--like rolling straight out of bed to do 110 pushups. Real stupid.I developed a neck problem a la what Ern describes. My arms hurt so bad I could not touch a guitar for two solid months. There was also an accompanying headache which was fierce and unrelenting. I tried acupuncture, acupressure, various forms of massage, chiropractors, inversion boots, jacuzzis and MD's. None worked.Eventually a neurolgist told me a physical therapist would need a magic wand to cure me.An operatoion was the only chance, so I took it. I was lucky to have one of the better surgeons in the country. The operation was a great success. But eventually (16 years later) the pain crept back as calcification proceeded and was almost as bad as it was before. Would I need another operation? Then I heard about a miracle drug and was able to convince my doctor at the Indian clinic to prescribe some. After the second pill I felt normal and still do five years later. If I go 18 hours without a pill the pain comes right back in all its fierceness. But after a few pills it is gone again. Made me a believer and saved my life. I am pretty sure I would have ended it all if I had not been able to find relief. There was no way to do the things I love doing anymore. Now I play guitar anytime I want to. I just have to exercise a little caution and know when to put it down for a while.
