Good suggestion Glen.
I like poor myself. And that last line could use a could in it, I think. Let's see what Mike thinks though.

Maybe

Poor (pour)
weak
stale
failed
pained
forced

Since I say "poor" like Pooooor and not like "pore" I would never have gotten the pun. But a country singer would say it that way. It's subtle, and a better word than lame anyway. I like it.

Talk about things taking way too long. I made the "poor" for "lame" substitution and pronounced this a good lyric. Then I went to work on the music. I played it at a song circle, and when people lost interest, I knew I had a problem. And since it's not the lyrics, it's the music.

It took me until today to come up with a new melody (I tried all kinds of things ... a switch from 4/4 to 2/4 was the biggest change), and to support that I made a word change or two, probably not enough to post it again. And now of course we're in crazy season, so cutting even a simple demo will be hard, but I'll try to get it up here before too long!
