Re: Problem with my pro tools
jim
thanks for all your help
i did it up to here: Within K/EW:
Set the cello to receive on MIDI channel 1
Set the violin to receive on MIDI channel 2
what is K/EW? is that short for the Kontakt? if it is...how do i get to it. i searched the whole pt documentation manuel and found nothing
even though i didn't get that part....i loaded the instrument track with a cello and i'm seeing the cello signal on the midi cello track. so i'm on the right track....no pun intended

Re: Problem with my pro tools
By K/EW I was referring to Kontakt Player loaded with East West.
From my earlier post I'm assuming you're using Kontakt Player for your East West library. If you're using a different player maybe let us know in case it makes a difference to anything, eg if the player only has a stereo output and you want to convert parts to audio, you'll need to do them individually.
Either way, in your player, for each instrument (cello, violin etc), set the same MIDI channel as you've done for the corresponding MIDI track.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Re: Problem with my pro tools
good point, - even if you have the Play engine for the EW strings, it also has multiple outputs so you can still do a similar process to the second workflow - or the first by using the 1-2 stereo output.

Re: Problem with my pro tools
I would study Jim's detailed explanation of what to do. I think you may be a little confused about the differences between audio/midi/instruments etc. I will try and clarify:
Think of Kontakt as an empty stage with a PA, it has all the infastructure in place for a band to play.
For a gig to happen you need to place instruments on the stage (Kontakt). So you can load a drum instrument, a bass, a guitar etc...
Midi is the players, they themselves don't make the sounds but they pressing the keys and playing the strings etc...
So you need to put the instruments on the stage and connect the players to the instruments. The Midi data that you are inputting has to link up to the instruments within Kontakt. Then as with a stage analogy, the audio from the instruments needs to come out (to the crowd, or in this case your monitors). This can then be routed pretty much any which way you like, further down the road.
With that in mind have a re-read of Jim's post and it should be a little clearer. Sorry for such a conceptual reply but this may help you.
Jamie
P.S. I know people in the city who could give you some pointers if needed, but you may want to consider taking a course at your local college.

Re: Problem with my pro tools
Charlie, seems like you're using Play for your EW samples not Kontakt. I haven't used Play hence the confusion on my part, sorry about that. But as Andy says, Play also has multiple outputs, so if you substitute 'Play' where we've put 'Kontakt' you should be fine.
Let us know how you get on!

Re: Problem with my pro tools
thanks for your help everyone:
ya...i suspect i have the play engine....not Kontakt; even though i think i use that for my garritan orch.
i'm at work right now, but i'll give it try when i get home.
the only thing i don't like about all this is that the midi tracks will only have one instrument on it. this will create more work for me when i do duplicates
when i was dupilicating the instrument tracks; they had the 3 instruments on it.
is there a way to put all 3 instruments on one midi track?

Re: Problem with my pro tools
I'm a little confused by your question. Do you mean you want 3 instruments triggered from 1 midi channel? If so, yes just make them the same midi channel input. What do you mean when you say you want to duplicate parts later?

Re: Problem with my pro tools
I'm guessing that when you say you have several instruments on one track that these are several parts on the same instrument eg 3 violin parts (rather than splitting your keyboard into different zones which play different instruments and output on different MIDI channels for example).
What I imagine you are doing is to use a new or duplicate Instrument track for a new instrument or octave etc, and that each instance of EW is playing just one instrument type. If so you can still keep a similar workflow using MIDI tracks. The difference is that you'll only need one instance of EW, which will play all the instruments. The individual instruments are accessed by setting different MIDI channels. You could also do MIDI track duplicates if necessary, but they will all play via a single instance of EW.
So maybe try this...
Open up your original session that has the duplicate Instrument tracks.
Use 'Save As...' to save the session with a different name so that you don't overwrite the original.
Create MIDI tracks above the Instrument tracks.
Move the MIDI regions you've already recorded/duplicated from the Instrument tracks onto the MIDI tracks instead.
Route the MIDI tracks to EW to play the desired instruments by selecting MIDI channels from the track outputs as described earlier.
Delete the duplicate Instrument tracks, leaving only 1 Instrument track with EW on it.
In Play/EW select corresponding MIDI channels for the instruments you want.
This should give you the same result as using multiple Instrument tracks, but without overloading your computer.
When you record new parts you can record them straight into MIDI tracks, creating new MIDI tracks and routing them as needed.

Re: Problem with my pro tools
ok...this is what i'm doing:
i record east west strings on an instrument track which is a type of midi track. the instruments i'm loading in east west and recording are violin, viola and cello all on this one instrument track.
strings sound the same so when i'm in the high register of my midi keyboard controller; it's the violins that are being triggered. the low register; it's the cello, etc.. Sometimes in my playing, i'm in the low/middle and high registers all at the same time.
after i record these 3 instruments on this track; i dupilcate it. I transpose the duplicated track up or down and edit it more.
before i transpose it; the dupilicated track is exactly like the first one. plus it's using another play engine, which is freaking out my computer because it's too much work.
From what i understand; you're showing me how to make dupilcates of this instrument track without dupilcating the play engine. I'll just use one play engine with many instrument/midi tracks from what i understand.
this way....my computer won't freak because there's only one play engine working
aaahh. on my input on the instrument track i see under (plug in) it says play-k/ew....but it's whited out. i quess that means i do have the kontakt player. but how do i get to it?

Re: Problem with my pro tools
So to keep the same compositional workflow...
Do as you're doing but record to a MIDI track instead of an Instrument track.
Duplicate the MIDI track for your further edits, transposition etc.
You'll just need to have set the output of the MIDI track to a MIDI channel that will play your string sounds within EW.
Hopefully that will sort it!
