Well, while I'm here, I LOVE modern music. And I LOVE Bach. And all music in between. Bring it on! I'd love to hear some modern music.

Best Regards,

Ern 8-) :)
Hi Ern!

I always find threads like this an amusing diversion.

Like you one of my hero’s is Bach but a post that has gone largely unnoticed was Zircon promoting his new album which is fantastic.

http://zirconstudios.bandcamp.com/album/unearthed

A few years ago he used to complain on here that nobody took him seriously because he was too young,I think he was about eighteen at the time.

I reassured him that age had nothing to do with anything and it was all to do with the quality of the music.

He has since gone on to be very successful,so congrats to him!

The moral of this story,I dunno,I don’t think there is one!!!!

Oh yes there is,

Do what you love.

Mick.

I think you're onto something Mick, "do what you love". I was reading something that reminded me of this thread, mainly the beginning question about "modern" music, and the admonitions for not making it, or by definition what some might consider modern music, essentially abandoning your own creativity and pursuing demand or dictates.
I quote a line from Willhelm von Humboldt, " If a man acts in a purely mechanical way, reacting to external demands or instruction
rather than in ways determined by his own interests and energies and power, “we may
admire what he does, but we despise what he is.” Maybe that addresses the "phony" part of writing modern music?
It's something everyone explores for themselves, it's not a definitive true or false question. I'd say a better, more applicable definition of "modern" might be fashionable. And I'm not convinced the fashion police are taken too seriously, lol!

Dear DesireInspires

I think the issue that you keep running into on this thread (as well as some of the others you have posted on) is that your written words are coming across as condescending and "holier than thou" at times. This may not be your intention but due to the fact that many people have responded to your posts in the manner that they have should be an indication of this. Written words do not always land the same as spoken words do. Just the very title of this thread could be interpreted in an unpleasant manner by some readers. I believe that Mazz posted something very similar to what I am saying in another thread that you had posted on.

Also, some of your comments have created contradictions of what you are saying. You say that this is about supporting each other in what we do. How does the title of this thread create support? You say that people who are not in the game shouldn't give advice like they are? You have given advice, are you in the game? What is your definition of being in the game? You have admitted yourself that you are not an expert of music and have no desire to be. Does that mean that you aren't in the game? If your definition of "being in the game" is earning money from writing and producing music than I know for a fact that many of the people who have posted on this thread (if not all) are in the game. If being in the game means earning 100% of your income from music than we are of course talking about a much smaller percentage yet there are Taxi members who are earning 100% of their income from music.

On another thread you made the comment "Conclusion: I would not count on getting a phone call from a Taxi forward.". So I pose this question to you again, how is that creating support for your fellow musicians?

I hope that what I am pointing out to you makes sense here. I am not trying to create an argument with you or anyone else on this forum and in my experience of being on this forum I've hardly run into anyone who has been here simply to throw stones and create arguments.

So, I will summarize with these questions for you that I would really like to know about you. Not from any sort of negative place but purely from a "what do you do" kind of place:

- Are you currently a Taxi member?
- If so, have you gotten any deals through Taxi?
- Has your music gotten placements on any TV shows or movies?
- If so, which ones and did it happen through Taxi or on your own?
- What sort of music do you do?
- Can we hear some of your music?

I am always happy to answer these questions for other people. I have most of this info posted on my Taxi page. I also think that some people feel that you are hiding by not posting your real name or any link to your music thereby creating a question of your sincerity and true purpose. I do hope that you answer some of my questions directly so that those who have had their feathers ruffled can see that you are in the same game as the rest of us no matter what point in the game you are at.

Respectfully yours,
Robbie Pittelman

See, now was that so hard? Now that I can actually hear what you do instead of what you say, I know who I'm talking to.

So now I'll answer your original question. No, I do not hate modern music. Like all styes of music there are great pieces and there are horrible ones and the majority of them sit somewhere in the middle. I like good music and I don't like bad music. Style doesn't matter to me at all.

The style you posted is more about sound design over a groove than really "writing" music. Nothing wrong with that, it is what it is. But the fact remains that it is what it is. It's about effects and pulse and sonically sculpting movement with electronic equipment. And when done right, it can be awesome. Do I write in this style? Sometimes sure. It's fun. I prefer modern orchestra/electronic music and horror (making mad sounds as you refer to it). Which is also considered modern by the way.

You should be aware that a lot of people on this forum have been here for a long time and it's usually a very friendly place. There is a lot of priceless knowledge lurking around here and it flows freely to friendly people. People here don't try to impose their ideas about music as gospel and try to argue about what style of music is better than any other. That would be childish, which is why you've gotten so much slack from your posts.

You've basically got a choice here, tone down the condensation and be cool and learn a ton, or continue act like your "all that" and be ridiculed, mocked and eventually completely ignored. I hope you choose the first option as this is a good place to hang out and get to know people.

I feel good about myself now. Thanks!
