Re: The Gulf Oil Spill
I don't get too excited about "serious safety violations" when it is the press or politicians trying to sensationalize and capitalize. I personally would rather know what the violations are and wonder why if they were so serious, that they were allowed to continue operations as long as they paid hefty fines. Let's see now, the Cherry Point facility in Washington State was recently inspected after the gulf incident, and they found 13 serious violations. And don't you just know they were inspected with a fine tooth comb, lol!
1). They were cited for allegedly not addressing certain recommendations made by the refinery's process hazard analysis.
2). For not ensuring piping and instrument diagrams were complete and accurate.
3). For failing to provide or update certain written operating procedures.
4).For failing to document each test and inspection performed on process equipment.
5). For failing to establish a regular frequency for such inspections, among others. (Looks like the remainder of the serious violations were lumped into "among others".
Hmm.Then it mentions in 2005, after the Texas City explosion, under a plea agreement they paid a $50million dollar fine, for violating federal clean air laws! Really, no safety violations? Of course an explosion at a refinery might violate clean air laws, but so does burning leaves in your back yard, lol!!!
I quoted all this stuff from a google entry, huffington post it looks like, random search for bp violations.
Apparently no other oil company has a backup plan either, I can't imagine them sitting on their hands with such info while all this is going on. I would agree that might sound criminal.
I don't see anything that specific even in the specifics, but honestly, it looks very nitpicky and could be as simple as not dotting the i's or crossing the t's, or minor paperwork problems. I'm not defending BP, it just bugs the crap out of me when things are so distorted and taken out of context and so obviously by the press and by politicians and those for their own selfish gain, whatever happened to "the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth"?
I guess as far as vacuuming and skimming the oil for profit in my other post, well I guess they are already doing that.LOL!

Re: The Gulf Oil Spill
I was thinking specifically of the errors that led up to the explosion and the failure of the blowout preventor.
But even before this spill they had a bad track record. I can get details but here is a starting point:

Re: The Gulf Oil Spill
*97% of the worst violations
*"flagrant" safety violations
*egregious willful
*"here's a look on how these violations breakdown:
760 egregious willful
69 willful
30 serious
3 unclassified
My goodness, that pales in comparison to my record, I have 3,069 egregious willfuls, 129 plain willfuls, that includes the 17 vanilla willfuls, 267 serious's, and I'm ashamed to say 15,134 unclassifieds.
I'm sure the facts are never quite as colorful and are for the most part quite boring, of course if I got paid to participate I might, lol!!
For the most part I just enjoy the comedy of journalists and politicians. The other night on one of the news channels, they had a story of an aborted abduction, a lady was jogging, and a man stopped and open the door, probably to give her a ride, and the lady run off before she ever heard the guy say anything, and the news crew and police were all over it giving a description of the car and a partial description of the man, although she didn't have too many details cause she didn't stick around, lol!! But I think it was premature to be calling the incident a failed kidnapping.

Re: The Gulf Oil Spill
This spill is a heartbreaker.
Its not just BP.
The rig was operated by Halliburton. All american contractors.
Strictly speaking BP just own this well and it will be interesting to see if this disaster was caused by Halliburton.
The problem is the corruption at government level.
The oil industry is effectively self regulated because they have power.
This was an accident waiting to happen so I suggest people look long and hard at oil man "Bush" and how he allowed it to happen......but then its pretty obvious why he allowed it.
Governments all over the world are corrupted by corporations.
All comes down to greed and it makes me puke.

Re: The Gulf Oil Spill
I talked to a friend the other day, and he said his father is talking like the guy at the bar in THE BIRDS: "It's the end of the WORLD!" --- But, he may be right! It's sickening, and a real disaster.
It's funny (but not so funny) that Dick Cheney was top-dog at Halliburton, and you know what that money bought him? Not only a huge house and millions upon millions of dollars, but he PAID OFF Google to take his home off of Google Earth! That's the truth. Try and find it --- you can't. What a bloodsucker. He should be in prison, if you ask me.

Re: The Gulf Oil Spill
What is interesting is that there was a news item 3-4 months ago that BP had just drilled the deepest well ever.....34,000 feet in 2 miles of water. They found 3 Billion Barrels over six miles down!
Pemex (Mexico) had a blow out a few years ago, just south of BP's and it took them over a year to drill relief wells to stop it. This blow out will be gushing for a while.
Red Adair got famous for putting out a well in Texas that had burned for five years.
The US of A burns through the amount of oil gushing up every few minutes, every day.

Re: The Gulf Oil Spill
Well, some of y'all can laugh and joke about the press, the distortions, whateva you like. It doesn't matter to me if it was BP or Exxon or any one of the others or what pretend stats they all throwin out. They all drilling deep off coast so no one can see. Outta sight is outta mind and it almost kept right on payin off.
But this is my home. We had another five years of hard, hard labor to maybe get back some of what we lost in katrina. I rebuilt because I had no choice but don't think I wouldn't have taken it if I could. My kids are gonna be suckin' in dispersants and evaporating oil every single day instead of every four, so laugh and laugh about how the numbers are distorted or the gov't should be involved. Greed got them here and now my people are gonna be paying. Again.
I would like to know why there isn't a state of emergency all along the coast, most especially in poor poor Louisiana and soon, here. They all act like this gonna be gone in a matter of days, like it's an inconvenience. I don't know what Obama's thinkin (and I voted fo him so don't get all up at me) when he thinks BP gonna clean this up with as much enthusiasm as they drilled it out.
I've survived the death of a child, breast cancer, Katrina but I don't know if we are gonna survive this. That's all I got to say about it. I'm Buddhist and I got to accept and let go. Jes give me a damn minute.

Re: The Gulf Oil Spill
Absolutely....Halliburton has their dirty little fingerprints all over this. If there is a special place in hell reserved for corporations, they have the best seat in the house. I'm betting as the inquiry into this unfolds, Halliburton's name will come up quite often. Of course, this does not dismiss BP's role....they have a reserved seat in hell too.jdhogg wrote:This spill is a heartbreaker.
