Re: The Gulf Oil Spill
I know, I'm very sorry. I can't tell you what to do about your kids. They couldn't do the burning here, it would kill the marsh worse than the oil. But the disbursement's have made some people sick, not in New Orleans, but just south of here. I say you have to watch that closely and make your best judgement call.
As far as the hurricanes, you know how they can go. Until they are really on the final path its hard to know where they are gonna push ashore. I'm gonna just take that as it comes. If the oil does get pushed ashore in a surge and really hits you head on, I can almost guarantee you that the SBA will forgive the loans. Just do the smart thing and run inland and then make your decisions from there. You (we) still have a very good shot of dodging the hurricane bullet. But it's gonna happen somewhere this summer. It's gonna be an absolute miracle if doesn't. So be prepared to evacuate, like always. How close are you to shore?
At times like this, you can only take it one day at a time. I know it's frustratingly helpless right now and its natural to worry, but try to keep positive and keep your eyes open. Enjoy what you've got around you and just take it one day at a time. We're not at rock bottom yet. And there's a very good shot that we'll dodge the hurricane bullet directly. So just stay positive.
When and if, we take it again, we'll just have to make our decisions then. I'm probably not going to rebuild again. But I'm also not so sure where else in the world I really want to live. So until it's actually gone, I'm gonna just keep doing what I do and keep hoping for the best. You should do the same.
Here's to them getting that damned saw unstuck and capping this thing somewhat. We need a small miracle right now.

Hey boo, I get you. Can't imagine living anywhere else and Scott's job isn't in danger (like the only time they need biologists is when it's as bad as this).fusilierb wrote:I know, I'm very sorry. With the gulf being as hot as it is this year, it's gonna hit somewhere along us but I tell myself if it'll jes be a cat 1 or 2 and if I jes get 6 inches, I can rebuild and that keeps me hangin on. I live 2 miles from the beach, 1/4 mile from Graveline (grah-va-leen to those not from down here) Bayou. They can't burn this close to shore, they'd have to evacuate us all. The stench is incredible all by itself on slow days. It keeps raining and that helps a bit.
Thanks fo the gentle slap upside the head. I needed it. I'm jes down a bit from losin Gully and now this, I'll buck up again, I think, if it doesn't get worse than this. I've never chanted for peace so hard in my entire life, lol.

It's an election year. (so, yeah, crazy) Fear not, disaster will be declared and there will be Federal aid, at some point. National guard is on standby, and I expect the regular army will be involved, soon. Coast Guard, as ever, is already hard at work. The full extent of the magnitude of this disaster hasn't been realized as of yet, and there's a shortage of experts on what to do about this unprecedented situation. I doubt we'll see the slap on the wrist Exxon got from the courts when this plays out; you don't go wiping out a billion $ a year seafood industry without consequences. (in fact, if it were up to me, the people responsible for those oil rig inspections would be lined up and shot, after a fair trial, though it wouldn't fix anything).

As to where y'all could move, how's 'bout sunny California, where the mudslides are puttin' out the wildfires and the Big One could come at any minute? Can't have ya bein' bored, now, can we?

Thanks, Steve....my song is doing pretty good on You Tube. It placed in the Top 100 Most Discussed on You Tube on June 1st, (it was number 79) so I'm excited about that.

Re: The Gulf Oil Spill
I think you have every right to be spitting mad...I certainly would be. This is a national disaster, and freakin' BP and the government need to fix it NOW. I know it's hard for them to do so. I've heard that the only solution will be drilling those two wells to fix it, but STILL.....squids wrote:It hit shore here today. I honestly am at a loss. I don't think I can safely allow my kids to stay here if they're gonna be burning off shore like they've been (about every four days these days) if they're gonna do it daily. If a hurricane hits, the oil will go where the rain/surge go. I'll have to let the bank take the house and I'll still owe the SBA 40 grand.fusilierb wrote:I'm afraid that the news is gonna get a lot worse before it gets better on this one. It just hit Dauphin Island today and is moving towards Florida. Louisiana's already been taking on oil for three weeks now. The storms are going to be very active this year, which is going to complicate the relief well, to say the very least. There is never a good time for a catastrophe, but we were finally really starting to rebound from Katrina here, so the timing is especially depressing.squids wrote:Oh, and chants out to Jen who's in our area too......jes hopin it can somehow stay our way and not drift ova to Florida or anywhere else. And no storms. Please.
Keep your head high. Keep being mad. And keep fighting. Once they finally figure out how to stop this damned thing, we'll do whatever we have to to clean up our shores. I just hope that the wildlife is as resilient as the people are. The two are extremely interdependent in my state. This is one for the record books. It's gonna be a long slow road to recover from this, both ecologically and economically and mentally and emotionally.
We have to, as a species, get serious about alternative energy or we're going to destroy everything that sustains us on this planet.

I can't figure out what the hell to do, Bryan. I'm almost outta mad. I don't get why this isn't considered a national disaster, why there aren't more military here, why my governor keeps saying it isn't so bad or that it won't hit when it is and it did. Are all the politicians jes gone crazy now or is it jes me?
Brokenhearted, lost squids
My heart goes out to you, Squiddy...wish I was here this weekend so that we could talk, but I'll be gone to Georgia to attend a wedding and we'll be camping too. I hope you find a way to get some help for this somewhere.
I really don't care if people think I'm angry. I am very angry about this, and I don't even live on the coast. But as an Alabamian, the Gulf coast is in our blood. It's part of who we are even if we live a few hours away....we always get down there eventually. But most of all, my heart goes out to the people who live on the coast. Lord, how much more do you folks have to endure? Breaks my heart really....anyway, I gotta sign off. I have to run some errands and get ready for a very early morning trip...see everyone later.

The lyrics are pretty clever, but I took points off for execution. (some autotune woulda helped)

Of some interest!!
Tony Hayward's salary surges to £4m as BP profits slump 45%
Published Date: 06 March 2010
By JENNIFER HILL
A BUMPER bonus helped the boss of oil giant BP notch up a 41 per cent rise in total pay over the past year, despite the company's profits plummeting by 45 per cent.
Tony Hayward, chief executive of Europe's largest oil company by production, took home £4.01 million in salary, cash bonus and share awards last year, up from £2.85m in 2008.
His performance-related pay jumped from £1.5m to £2.1m, which BP said
reflected the "impressive achievements of the year and the turnaround of performance over the past three years".
That will buy him some life 'when he gets it back'!!!

Re: The Gulf Oil Spill
I need to practice forgiveness but I also believe in accountability. That man and his lil cronies need to be punished. I notice that all the other oil companies submitted plans fo drilling that were exactly like BP's. It's sad a newspaper had to find that out, shoulda been the gov't. I hope the ugly pictures that are croppin up now will expose these damned people. I'm sure the country is aware that we're drillin but that they wouldn't have agreed to it if it was gonna be like this. I want to believe that.davekershaw wrote:The damage to his life will be very, very modest!michael11 wrote:Tony Hayward, chief executive of Europe's largest oil company by production, took home £4.01 million in salary, cash bonus and share awards last year, up from £2.85m in 2008.
The only response we have at this time is to simply boycott the tar outta them, drop their stocks to a degree that they won't overtly risk somethin like this fo a long time again. Neva mind that it's too late for everything down here. People here sayin nothin will change until it hits the stream, goes up the east coast. THEN they'll do somethin. I hope that doesn't happen; no one should have to suffer like this. No one. These institutions have to be called to order in some way and the only way I know is to simply avoid all the places that someone listed earlier in this thread.
I'm feelin fo my po pelicans. I love them, I like watchin when they take the young ones to 'school' with the older ones to show them where to fish, where to go when the weather's bad. I always feel betta goin to class knowin they doin it too.
