Two Minute Piano Concerto ala Mozart

Post by utremifa » Fri Jul 22, 2011 2:40 am

Hi folks,

I couldn't resist trying my hand at this challenge: write a piano concerto in the style of Mozart's Allegro from the Piano Concerto in G Major No. 17 and it should be just two minutes long! The last time I did one of these Classical listings they asked for Haydn, so I gave them Haydn and then the piece was rejected because it sounded like Haydn. :?: I kid you not. Go figure. I hope the guys who did this listing really do want Mozart.

I've posted my piece, Concerto in Bb for Piano.... on my Taxi page:

It is a Finale rendition which sounds pretty lackluster, but before I spend oodles of time doing a mockup I'd love to get your thoughts on it. Is it too esoteric or do I hit the right tone? Any thoughts are welcome.

Cheers,

Vince

Thanks for your input.

I enjoyed that alot. Very well done in my opinion. I just felt that there were a few areas of clashing frequencies especially around the 01:50 mark. It might be my headphones though.
Good luck with it. :D

Thanks for listening and I'm glad you liked it. I think the clash your hearing is due to the reverberation that Finale uses. That won't be an issue when I create a mockup with much better samples and a high end reverb.

Vince, this is great! Very realistic. Did you play the piano in real time? Love the playing regardless; all the trills etc. are spot on Mozart to my ears.

Kudos!

Hey John,

Thanks for the listen and the compliment. The piano is actually rendered by Finale (with some intellegent programming on my part ;) ) I'll work on a mockup in the near future with VSL and EW Pianos. It'll sound soooooo much better! But I have to say that Finale does a great job for a quick representation.

Best,

Vince

Hi Vince,
I think you've done a wonderful job with this - it's very Mozart indeed. I would love to hear the real mock-up of it - I think it will be amazing! Bravo!
And because your Hayden piece was rejected for being too Hayden, I'm wondering if they want the "feel and spirit" of this piece, but with a touch of your own style in it? Just a thought.
I'm writing for this listing too and I read the listing with a big question mark as to whether or not they actually want piano in it. The Benda Symphony No 9 which is the other reference piece is not a piano concerto - so perhaps it's optional??? What made me hesitate was that the first 3 minutes of the 17th Concerto has no piano in it anyway.... so I've opted for no piano. But it does say ""style of the opening movement" and that means the whole of the first movement I guess. I'm going round in circles...
Anyhow, I will be really surprised if this doesn't meet their requirements... I'll be interested to know!
Good luck with it!
Georgie

I listen to a great deal of classical music particularly Mozart. I'm amazed at how close you've got with this piece. Too short for my liking but obviously within the constraints of the listing. Nothing but praise here and my only comments would have been regarding the sound which you have adressed. Got to be a winner surely ?

Regards Kev

Hi Georgie and Kev,

First off thanks for taking the time to listen! Kev, I agree about the length and I'd love to write a complete movement, but they'd never use the whole thing and besides, there are several listings this month that I wish to write for.

Georgie, don't sweat the piano thing. I've gotten pretty good at reading through the listing lines and I think I'm safe in saying that the company just wants energetic (uptempo) symphonic music that is in the Classical Style. If you can write piece in that style that has a touch of your own voice then I would presume that is just fine with them. I mean, write in the style of Benda???? I'm also composing an orchestral symphony movement (actually a sonatina) for this listing, which will have a little more Vince Russo in it.

About the Haydn that was not forwarded: the reviewer absolutely loved the piece and said that he was on the fence about whether to forward it. Ultimately he decided not to because he thought that it wasn't light enough for shopping mall music (I'm paraphrasing here somewhat). The listing actually did ask for music in the style of Haydn, but maybe they were looking for a light little march or menuet and my piece is a full blown symphonic menuet complete with development etc. BTW, I left that piece up on my Taxi site. It also has a touch of Vince Russo in it as well.

Thanks again,

Vince

Go ahead and mock it up! It's right in the style! I think it's good to have stuff like this in the bag anyway, even if it doesn't make it through this listing. But if they really do want "in the style of Mozart", then this is the schizzle. :D

Hi Vince, this sounds fantastic, Mozart all the way! Can't wait to hear the mock-up!

Thanks for sharing it!

Cheers,
Vincent!
