"We're Done" Studio Snippet. What's it need?

Post by cameron » Thu Dec 04, 2008 9:49 am

Hey y'allJust got this back from the studio for approval. Seems to me it needs something that I can't quite put my finger on (melody and lyrics perhaps?) If you have the time please let me know what you think.http://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_ ... am=trueFYI, the last 10 seconds or so is cut off on this snippet. Thanks!Cam

Cam, I think the music is great. Maybe I'm drinking too much coffee, but it seems like there is something missing musically on the hook. Maybe you should move that last note of the chorus up? I think it would sound good now that I think of it...I'd raise that last note on "done" up and have him hold it out. Either way, opinions are like you know what's, everybody's got one. By the way, I LOVE that last verse. Just awesome.Andy

Sounds excellent. You guys are pissing me off!lolSounds like i'm on the radio when i hear ya'lls work. Very nice. Very very nice. Now i'm old, got poor ears at times, so when i say your voice could be more up front for me that's not a criticism, it's just possibly that my radars are beat up and i don't pick up signals like i used to. But, if you can bring you voice up front more, i'd like to hear it again. What radio station are you on every day? I'm certain you are!Doc

I think the choruses could be stronger, that is, maybe an extra guitar or something to give it the illusion of getting louder.Other than that it's a very nice I like the crisp vocals!Peace

hi cam!i already gave you my comments and i THINK (it's been awhile...) they were mostly lyric related (tenses?), the title/hook and i think i said something about the chorus needed a good upper harmony to strengthen it--after listening, i still think it, but hell, as you well know my friend, my success is ZERO....all that said, think this came out pretty damn good actually!all the best, warren

Clever song guys! I think the rule for the chorus is to throw everything you can into it . . . it seems that there just can't be enough "big" in a chorus for the country dudes.

Thanks Andy, Doc, Chris, Warren and Bill. I was a little worried about this one going into the studio, but all in all I think it came out OK. I just got it this afternoon and now that I've listened to it a few times I'm thinking the chorus harmonies definitely need to come up and also that it needs something else instrumentally in the chorus to make it bigger, like most of you said. Pedal steel? No wait... COWBELL!! I also think maybe the lead vocals could be a tad louder and perhaps need some fattening up somehow.Made quite a few lyric changes since the work tape, but some I changed and later put back to the way I had them originally because they just sang better. I had changed "but I knew in a minute" to "but I knew pretty soon", which is actually more what I wanted to say, but it just didn't have the same zing (official songwriter's term) to it.Doc, I only wish that were me singing. That's a hired gun. When I was racing cars we used to say "How fast do you want to go?" which was synonymous with "How much money have you got?". In music it's "How good do you want it to sound?".Thanks again guys,Cam

Hey Cam.I like this song pretty much the way it is. The bg vox could come up a tad and the addition of either a pedal steel or maybe a b3 laid back mello and sweet. That decending part after "I would have run" could be emphasized a little. However, I'm just a newbie, but I do like to think creatively while listening, and the above comments came to mind.As I mentioned earlier, the song stands well on it's own the way it is

Thanks Dave, that's what I'm going to do. My SongU coach hated the work tape of this song. I don't expect he'll like this much better, but I kind of like the way it turned out myself. Like Rick Nelson said, "You can't please everyone, so you've got to please yourself."Cam
