Web Hosting

Post by raymy » Thu Sep 23, 2010 12:57 pm

Hi All,

I am looking for a web hosting service to to create a website to represent myself as a writer and a singer. Since I work in various genres, I would like I good looking, easily accessible site that would allow me to have multiple pages for my various projects. Also, price is an important factor. Any favorites?

I use http://www.bluehost.com Costs about $7/month...you can go as plain or fancy as you want and have multiple domain names, multiple pages.........My site is fairly plain but that is just due to my limited time to devote to web design. I intend to revamp when I have a little more time.. or maybe I'll just get my PA to do it for me.. ....
Oh yea..I also wanted to avoid the cookie cutter look that some of the cut and paste template sites give you...

GoDaddy.com Several different prices for hosting packages. I built my site from scratch and beamed it up so I don't have any idea what that would cost. I've had a variety of sites on GoDaddy over the years and the one thing I can tell you is they have NEVER been down. If that's important to you, you should check it out.

+1 on GoDaddy. No problems with them at all.

Wordpress is, IMHO, the best free way to build your site. It's pretty easy to get a good looking site going without really having to learn much and if you do know what you're doing, its really powerful. Very simple to update and change. Free iPhone app so you can post and update on the road, if that's something your into.

I can't vouch for scalability, cuz I never had a million web hits in a 24-hour cycle, but these folks have GoDaddy way beat on price. ;) I can vouch for WordPress, though, and you can blend the two, if you like.

Well, I haven't checked prices in awhile so I may be changing when renewal comes up. I buy my web hosting in 2 year chunks and it costs me about $3 per month. I don't think thats too bad...

I created my site with Apples' me.com service and got the domain name through Go Daddy. Me.com is pretty cool. It's a basic cloud computing service and includes tools to create and host a website among many other things.

If you are considering a custom web site, you might talk to John Merrill at OHCPI (dotcom). John worked for me for about 15 years, the last 13 of which was for Yes Marketing. He created a web site design and hosting division that served almost a hundred clients and now has his own company specializing in web design and hosting. While most of his clients (like those of Yes Marketing) are in the green industry, he does have experience creating web sites for musicians and music related companies. Project-One-Productions and Retro-Blue are two he did and still maintains for me and I know he has done others. (His son is a jazz and rock bassist out of Chicago.) I find his prices to be very reasonable and he can grow your web site into a retail sales outlet or whatever else you want it to be over time.

I think if you can get domain and hosting for $3-$4/mo, it ain't bad; it's also a fair point that you can also get fairly steep discounts for a longer commitment, but jes' like with cell service, you want to research again when the contract's up. Bandwidth costs tend to get lower over time, and you can ask your provider to match better deals you may find elsewhere.
