What style would this be

Post by Stein Thor » Fri Apr 30, 2010 7:39 am

Hi all, not been very active for awhile here (over a year :) ), but now I come for help and a bit of advice. I have been working on my recording and writing skills but I have no idea which style I´m writing in...

http://www.reverbnation.com/play_now/song_3868310

This song is a bit atypical for what I write now, can you please tell me which style I can pitch this at if any,, and also if you have any advice on what I can do better.

Thanks
Stein Thor

Stein,

Nice tune, I would say "Adult Contemporary" that's just my guess. The mix sounds good, the vocal chain is nice imo as well.

Stein,

Yes A/C ....maybe TV/Film.......personally I think a female voice would notch this up...well written...

Hi Stein, I loved your song. I think the melody's very catchy. I also think its AC. Im a beginner so I cant comment much on the technical side of your song, but I wish u good luck with it. :D

Hey there Stein!

Firstly - I really love this. It's beautiful! Beautiful, clean production.

I agree a female vocal would make this really awesome.
HOWEVER - having said that, I LOVE the vulnerability and quality of your voice! You remind me a lot of Roine Stolt from The Flower Kings.
Also - I think the rhodes(?) makes this sound very 70's. Lyrical content sounds kinda spiritual so you could even go Christian!
If you kept the rhodes and ad some strings/melotron and a guitar this could fit into a "classic" progressive rock category a la Yes or Flower Kings.

The cool thing is that you've got so many options with this -
1) to make it more contemporary:
I suggest a female vocal and a piano - then this could be used as film/T.V.
OR even a male vocal - but to be honest I think you're gonna need a native English speaker to sing it for you if you are hoping for film/T.V. placements in the U.S. or Canada. (I could be wrong...and I hope I am, but I have a feeling they are very picky when it comes to vocal delivery)

2) flush out the arrangement and get a prog-rock masterpiece

3) it is SO beautiful, keep it as as and market it yourself - sell it/distribute it online...sell it at your gigs whatever.

4) I can't read the lyrics but with a little refinement - this could be a Christian song!
Out of the ashes I am born again (could refer to your new life with/in Christ)
it would need a bit of a lyrical rework, but could be done.

Anyway,
Thanks SO MUCH for sharing!
I really enjoyed listening to this!

Peace,
Nick

Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to write all this for me, I will be sure to think your comments over...

the idea behind the song were the farmers suffering from the ash clouds coming from the now famous volcano of Eyjafjallajökull here in Iceland, pretty bad situation there.

again thanks for your review...

It's nice, you're a little off tempo but over all a nice piece. Nothing like a good old fashion Piano vocal cut sung with emotion and good lyrical content. Once you explained the lyrics it had even more impact. It could be instantly picked up for a documentary on that subject matter IMO. :D

Well written compositions, I feel something from just your attack on the instrument not even to mention the nice melodic content. :) You also have a nice bottom end on your vocal.

All IMO
