Now this is definitely what you’d call a universal lyric ;) To be (with TAXI) or not to be....

I’m due for renewal in the next couple of months, and right now I am dead set against it. However, this is not about a perceived failure of the TAXI model. I have learned an awful lot of good stuff in the last year (yes, I’ve not been around here that long, or that often)...from tunes that have been forwarded (a few), tunes that have been returned (quite a few!), and from my peers on the forum. Lots and lots of things about production, structure, melody, instrumentation, pitching sensibly, genre, style, technique. As a whole, the resource is quite fantastic, especially if you explore and contribute to the debates. That’s not to mention what you might pick up at the Rally – can’t speak from personal experience, but believe what I have read and heard.

My reality sounds a little like yours, 53mph. The competition is HOT! HOT! HOT! And there are so many of us trying to get the gigs, too. In honesty, my music is well played, well mixed, well produced, generally has a lot going for it...but it’s not perfect, and it’s not great. My tunes consistently get the nod for being well crafted, well recorded & being of broadcast quality – all very pleasing to hear, because they definitely weren’t good enough before – but somehow they are consistently just not right, either stylistically, or maybe the bar is too high (that ain’t exactly measurable on the TAXI barometer, but I kinda get it!) One can only strive to be better, and continue working. That’s always been my purpose, and I will continue - armed with new ideas and information. However, my own style has been diluted somewhat by taking a lot of advice – sometimes I just wanna play outside the ‘rules’. I believe the screeners know exactly what they are looking for, based on the relationships TAXI has forged. That’s one of the important factors here: music forwarded by TAXI is at least solicited. But, does a music supervisor or company executive know what they want until they hear it. Foo Fighters, Coldplay, U2 really alt rock, for example? Ultimately, I think your art is equally vulnerable is this controlled environment, as it is elsewhere in the so called music biz. You hear something, you tend to either like it or not, and then you’re after the next thing. As an artist, you may be bearing your soul, but your song is still just a commodity that is either a good fit or not...the hard part is getting it to the table in the first place. Rather like making your employment CV stand out enough to get a face to face interview.

The fact is, I do this part time, there hasn’t been a suitable TAXI listing for me to submit for in quite a while, and I’m getting more opportunities through other avenues – bearing in mind that authenticity & playing to your strengths are key metrics. There are tons of opportunities at TAXI, but you have to be damn versatile (and very, very good) to be able to submit to more than a handful on a regular basis. Remember, too, that the listing requirements are usually very specific. If 3 reference artists are listed, you’d better be a ringer for one of ‘em. As a very simplified analogy, it would be pointless for me to keep submitting songs and music to a Nashville based label, for example, because my music is rock / metal based (and not what we hear as being particularly contemporary, either). Barking up the wrong tree. So all the advice about finding the right niche is pertinent, and that’s no different with or without TAXI.

I believe I’d be correct is saying that some of the very serious and successful artists around here have helped themselves by being able to deliver the right kind of product. Y’know, they have a great chameleon like ability, either as imitators, or through collaboration with experts in another genre. If and when I get there, TAXI could well be an even more beneficial ride.

Btw, I think the reason you have had more input than expected is because you have been reasonable and realistic with your thoughts and ambitions  You’re not really bitchin and moanin!

Please don't get me wrong. I'm not angry with anyone here. I’m not flaming taxi as I think they do their jobs well. I'm just resigned to my limitations, and that in itself is a pretty tough thing to swallow right now. I've been with taxi for about 5 years and I know the ropes pretty well, so I've got a pretty hard skin when it comes to the crits...I'm just having a reality check here. I'm not up to the standard of what gets past. I've had my share of forwards over the years, though my forward to return ratio was not what I'd have liked it to be, but I've actually found that over the years my forward ratio has decreased, not increased. I tried to follow advice on production, song writing, rewriting to suggestions, being more selective on what I submitted to etc.. basically I tried to absorb as much as I could from Taxi, but I actually found my forward ratio drop as a result, which either means I wasn’t able to apply what they suggested or that I just don’t have what it takes. So, I’m gonna take a break from taxi and see what I can write when I’m not trying to write for submissions. Perhaps I need to relax and detaxi for a while to find where I want to be. The sound I want is in my head but I’m finding it hard to put it down to track. [shit, that sounds so stupid!]
If I had more ready cash I might follow Casey’s advice and hire in session players/singers, but at this stage in my life I’ve got to cut back on things. [personal reasons]. Thanks for the offer though Casey.

Billg, I too understood your first post in the same way as Casey. I thought, who the f**k is this guy rubbing salt in my wounds. [joke] ;)

I appreciate everyone’s input on this…never thought people would respond.
Hey 53, sorry didn't mean to come off like that! The point of my posts were to try to make you feel better by expressing that I think someone can screen for the technical and obvious but not for art. When it comes to an artistic choice I believe it's more of a "someone will know what they want when they hear it" and it COULD have very little to do with technical issues (ie broadcast quality etc.), stuff that we agonize over. Anyway, I meant to be encouraging-

I do have a slight niggling doubt about the advantages of being a taxi member and living in Europe. The only deal I ever struck was with a music library in the UK, perhaps because it was contractually easier fro them to deal with someone based in Europe. I wonder how many Euopean members are getting deals from the US listings. Just a thought.

Don't worry Bill, I didn't take it the wrong way. I totally got what you were trying to say, and it did fire me up a little. I have to add that since starting this thread I feel more fired up than before (funny that  ) One of my many problems is that I work in isolation with very little contact with other musicians. Occasionally I collab over the net but don't get to chat about what's on my mind alot with like minded people. It's been really nice having some sort of conversation with you guys on here. And, again, I've got to give taxi credit for giving people the space to do that. Many other boards ban people at the first whiff of dischord. Damn it...the more I linger here the more I'm tempted to renew...

53, sorry buddy, I didn't know you had the history. I thought you were a newbie and just disgruntled so rub out all of my last post!

I really hate to hear that you guys are so down and out. Thinkin' about leavin' and all. I think you guys are a lot like me in that being musicians we live and breathe this stuff. Like you I work entirely alone and some times its lonely. But I've played in so many bands in my life and had to overcome the whole ego thing so many times that I think I'm happier doing this by myself. At least for now. Where I think I differ from you guys is that I'm not looking for some kind of amazing success. I really think I've already got it just by layin' down tracks everyday. Even if nothing ever comes from it. What I'm really lookin' for is the fun of a challenge, and, TAXI is nuthin' but a challenge!

Good Luck!

You might want to read the recent TAXI article about Martin Haene from Switzerland (gitarrero). He gets placements in the US all the time, most of his contracts have been via TAXI. His music is great, he's a very nice guy, a real pro. It doesn't matter where you live, it turns out.

Cheers!

I've told many people who've asked me if I think Taxi would be a worthwhile investment for them - If you get nothing else but valuable real world feedback from the screeners, motivation to write write and write some more, incredible support and feedback from the forum members, and unbelievable education from the Road Rally (and btw - your yearly dues are less than the price of admission to most professional music biz cons) and you never get a single gig from your membership - it's a worthwhile investment.

And btw - you don't have to be a member to be active on the Forum. So, even if you decide not to renew for now - stay active on the forum. Keep submitting your stuff for review and feedback and immerse yourself in your music community.

RE: 53mph -

(Actually, this response is open to everyone to read and like or hate it. I directed it to 53mph because he is the poster of the topic, and my comments relate directly to him.)

First off, let me say that I am completely aware that there are 2 distinct groups of people (for the purposes of this rant) who are members of Taxi. Those two are:

1) Musicians/bands/etc. who would like to see their existing music put into tv and film. They will submit their pieces to listings they see that they feel a particular piece of theirs fits into.

2) Musicians/bands/etc. who are not submitting their pre-writtern material, but rather writing specifically for listed song "opportunities" that they see on taxi. This can be, and is, a complete career choice by itself.

(Yes, some people do both, but we're ignoring that for the time being.)

For the purposes of what I'm writing, I'm directing this specifically toward the group that falls under choice #1, which is the same one that I fall under, and I believe that 53mph actually falls under.

It sounds to me like you, 53mph, are a writer/musician who should be sticking to the principles of #1. You are a writer who writes for himself and creates art to be appreciated (or hated, depending on the listener) by those who are willing to listen. As you're realizing now, allowing your art to be changed by everyone who *thinks* they know better is not the path to be taken.

What if Salvador Dali was told "This is not at all like mainstream art! You have to get rid of all this weirdness and copy off of this other stuff that all looks the same."? What if Dream Theater was told, "This crap is way too complex and hard for listeners to comprehend. You've got to write songs with less chords, less changes, and less everything, just like green day."? What if Pablo Picasso hung his works in public and asked people to tell him if they thought it was "good enough"? What if Bob Dylan would show people his music and then ask them if they could tell him if his vocal ability or guitar playing ability was "good enough"? All of these guys would've hung it up and become IRS agents if they approached it in this manner.

I find this to be a problem with the whole idea of "reviews" where the reviewer tries to tell you how YOUR ART could be better. (I say this having not received any reviews, as I haven't asked for them.) Being an artist is an expression of one's self. Not an expression of somebody else that you're trying to copy.

Truth trumps talent. Honesty trumps copying other peoples' songs. Your art trumps everyone else's ideas about YOUR art. Every time. Don't write for anyone but yourself. If your music fits one of these listings, submit it. If it doesn't fit one, don't bother. Nobody ever became a legend by emulating others.

I identify with a lot said in this topic. Most of my returns are "stylistically off target". Even when I listen to the referenced artists there is too much of me in the track. I am reconsidering the whole Taxi concept also.

Most artist/musicians are glad to be stylistically off target. They consider it a good thing.
