Re: Why was Sgt. Peppers such a huge album?
Quote:I just saw a "new" release of Beatles material called "Love". What is up with that?I heard a radio interview/special about that. It was intended as a soundtrack for a Cirque De Ole production, but became more than that. They pretty much let George Martin reinvent some of the mixes, so it's more than a remaster, there are new edits, tracks mixed in that have never been heard, etc. From the few selections I heard, it sounded very interesting and shed's new creative light on some of the original masterpieces. One thing that stuck out the most, especially on the earliest stuff, is that the versions we are all familiar were evidently mastered at a faster than normal tape speed. I've never read that anywhere, and maybe it was my imagination, but the vocals and overall tempo seemed down a few notches from what I remember - though the performances seemed identical. I'll have to look into that, or maybe one of our resident Beatles gurus can confirm or negate that observation.Aub

Geoff Emerick was the engineer on the Sgt Pepper album. The Philly chapter of NARAS P&E recently had him for a special event. It was a great presentation..... For more lore, see his book "Here There and Everywhere" ArkJack

Quote:Geoff Emerick was the engineer on the Sgt Pepper album.Yea, he engineered 98% of Sgt. Pepper. The only times he was absent was the Peter Vince vocal session; The night they couldn't get into Abbey Road and recorded the track for "Fixing A Hole" at Regent Sound with Adrian Ibbetson as engineer; And the night Emerick took off and Malcolm Addey and Ken Townsend engineered the "Getting Better" track. My Beatles bible: "The Beatles Recording Sessions" written by Mark Lewisohn. Great book!Ringeaux

Regent Sound was independently owned, and many a hit record had been taped there including some of the Rolling Stones' earliest hits."We couldn't get in to Abbey Road that night," remembers George Martin. "But Regent Sound was a pretty awful little studio, very cramped and boxy."Paul actually did his lead vocal live while recording the rhythm track, and there was a bit of overdubbing a couple of weeks later at Abbey Road, where it was mixed.Sgt. Ernest Pepper Interesting Ern but I am even more confused. Regent was a crappy little studio and the Stones did record their first album there and I remember talking to the guy Bill I mentioned earlier about it and as I was barely a teenager and Bill Wyman was my hero (I have only just figured out the bassline to All Over Now,) I was very impressed!!Denmark Street is in the vicinity of Tottenham Court Road but there is/was also another studio close by that I also recorded at called Trident which was a much much better quality studio and I think Hey Jude was recorded their and was one of the Beatles few venturings out of Abbey Road. It's very late here Ern so apologies for my ramblings . Probably the one thing we can agree on is the Beatles were FABFantasticaly,Absolutly,Brilliant.I am sure Regent was on Denmark street because there was a coffee bar their and you could walk in and pick up any muscian you required for any session.Jimmy Page used to spend a lot of time their.I,m rambling again!!!!

Hi Michael,The author of my "Beatle Book" did quite a job in his research, but I'll admit I found a few things that didn't pan out.The Beatles DID record at Trident, but not very often. If the recordings at Regent are reputable, they sure got a similar sound to Abbey Road (EMI). Maybe everyone used the same gear, and methods at that time. It's a wonderful question! Who knows ----Ern Pepper

Just a Little Bit. Kenny Lynch/Mort Schuman. Olympic Studio A sideThe Remedies of Dr Bronicoy. Written and produced by the band.- Regent Sound Studios. B sideEMI ColoumbiaIn them days you just put any old rubbish on the B side.Hence the Regent Recording, the song was actually written by the singer and myself but the whole band got a credit on the publishing. Both songs are on my website ,Songs........near the bottom of the list www.mickgaughan.com
