Quote:Wow, this is one heck of a thread... My comments here are general, not about the book.I wanted to say something about luck. Obviously, there is an element of luck in success... being in the right place at the right time, etc. BUT we make our own luck. I know some will argue, but without talent or the right product, the luck won't do it. The Beatles got lucky when Brian Epstein had someone in a record store ask about The Beatles. He was curious so he checked them out. But if the Beatles were not incredibly talented, the lucky break wouldn't have mattered. They made their luck with years of hard work on top of their talent. So, when serendipity comes, will you be ready? CaseyI'm staying out of the luck debate after this post. It's mainly because I never meant to imply it was ALL luck. In some of my posts it may have seemed that way, but my original post spoke of hard work, dedication and also the creation of great songs as well. I'm not naive enough to believe that if you don't work hard or create a great song, that 'luck is all you need,' bapabadada. You can't get to point B if you don't work on point A first. The people who've gotten deals with TAXI are hard workers and they create great music. I probably shouldn't have used the example of TAXI folks anyway 'coz we were speaking strictly of the Billboard charters (hits) defined by this guy's book. There are times when luck has played a role though, at least, that's my perception (might not be anyone else's).....one only has to go back to the 70s and listen to tunes like "Disco Duck" and "Muscrat Love" to know what I mean.

Being in the right place at the right time can certainly be a factor Chits.Talent SHOULD do it, but there are many fine musicians and songwriters out there - better than some who are enjoying fame, who don't get the breaks, and sadly never will.Elton John and Bernie Taupin's meeting could be viewed as luck or fate. Whatever it was, I'm glad they did!But I would say the Spice Girls are one LUCKY bunch of lasses!

So, maybe we have to create our own luck. How about making a new band called "The Condiment Boys"? We'll make millions. The lead singers name should perhaps be Bouncy. It's the next big thing I swear.

Or where the nearest Mexican restaurant is. Some things are jes good to have around. Ya never know when ya might need 'em.Yup...
