Okay, so I'm a Zappa freak.

Here's one of my faves...(and I guess it's because of the back and forth with Vinnie and Frank) One of my favorite drummers and guitarists going at it. Bliss :D :D

Since I'm a rocker, I'd have to say Eric Clapton with Cream on "Crossroads" (Live), and especially Jimi Hendrix with Band of Gypsies on "Machine Gun" (Live).

Whereas Crossroads is a brilliant guitar solo, Machine Gun is an exploration in the sonic territories that the electric guitar can traverse. Pure genius.

That's so stoopid! ..but funny as hell.

BTW, that's what most of those kind of guitar solos sound like to me anyway. The funny thing is: If a singer tries to sing that many notes (in frills), guitarist can hear how ridiculous that trip is.

There's chops and then there's artistic taste. It's rare when those two inhabit the same individual.

The "best" I have no clue, but a solo that has inspired me lately has been Derek Trucks on Susan Tedeschi's record "700 Houses" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkPpBFeqrdU . The whole song gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it, but regarding the solo (starts at 3.00).. also pay attention to the delivery of the solo, beforehand, and the support from the band during it.. which is equally important to it's "greatness" 8-)

Besides Trucks' awesome trademark style (that little "lilt" at the end of each note) it builds really well to an emotional highpoint of the songs' dramatic "intensity curve" and is quite melodic, as I like solos. In my experience, if you can play a melodic guitar solo in a song, there's a good chance it's a solid write!

Imho, the best guitar solos.... treat chords like riffs and riffs like solos... and solos like riffs and riffs like chords.... seriously.
