I haven't heard any solos recently that lit me up, other than Derek Trucks'.

jimmy page...dazed and confused....the album version...not the bow version

love that end part when he plays those chords

mazz said.....There's chops and then there's artistic taste. It's rare when those two inhabit the same individual.

i agree.....jimmy page was considered a sloppy player by some...didn't have great chops.....i don't think that being the fastest player was important to him......he focused on the aesthetic of the solo. he wanted to sound the best that he could.

when asked; he called himself a composer over a guitarist

I get a little tired of hearing that about Page; there's nothing wrong with his chops; he was the top studio guitarist in England for over a decade. As for slop, he was damned accurate live, for a guy who drank a quart of vodka a day, and every note on his records is exactly where he wanted it. Guys that say that are the same ones that insist Hendrix could barely play, cuz he couldn't cleanly execute 64th note arpeggios at 280 BPM and never played in tune; even Yngwie never said anything so silly. Pushing and pulling at the tempo and bending almost, not quite, up to a target pitch are time-honored, drama-inducing blues techniques, not slop.[/rant] :D :D

I think i'm judging page by today's standards.

Not that today's standards are higher than fifty years ago; (in fact i think they're lower), but i think there might be a difference.

today there are AMAZING guitar players out there. fast and clean as hell. but that's just it. 99% are just fast guitar players.

they are part of that old jazz virtuoso thinking. Becoming the best, fastest player in the world mindset.

when rock replaced jazz in the 50s and early sixties, it brought in a new mindset of aesthetic composition over flashy playing.

think about those new rock people....they were not great musicians but great composers. john lennon....etc

the focus was now on collective bands (groups) and making songs that sounded good.

i like that mindset a lot better, because it brought us truly aesthetic music.

Starting to sound like the old knock knock joke: How many guitarists does it take to change a light bulb?

There's two versions I've heard:

100. One to change it and 99 to argue about how (insert famous guitarist here) would have done it.

Or:

100. One to do it and 99 to say "I can do that"

In the Eighties it was; one to change it and 99 to say " I can do it faster ! "
