When the Hammond Organ came out, musicians thought it was going to put them out of work. When the Moog Synthesizer came out, musicians thought it was going to put them out of work. When the drum machine came out, musicians thought it was going to put them out of work. All of these things (pianos, organs, guitars, computers, sequencers, compressors, MIDI, plug-ins, reverbs........) are tools to help us make art. Is someone who can skillfully make a great work of art using this software any less valid than Oscar Peterson or Leo Kottke? That's up to the audience to decide. Great live music will probably never die and may make a resurgence when audiences get so overwhelmed with the amount of nearly free crappy recorded music available to them there'll be a backlash and they'll actually seek out great live playing. Of course the cream will rise to the top in the recorded world too and who knows what that music will sound like? In the meantime, all of these tools are great but the proof is in the final product.I'm all for recording long takes and getting the feel and then "fixing" a note here or there. If the music warrants it, then that's the best approach. For other types of music, editing a note at a time may be the best way. Only a few geeks get up close and analyze Picasso's brush strokes and discuss his tools and techniques. The rest of us stand back and try to see the whole. That's how the audience will experience our work, the tools used to make it are irrelevant after the music is out in the world and we've moved on to the next piece.Peace,Mazz

I wish I had said that in my post...wait a minute! I DID!!Great minds think alike. As I said, I do think live music will be where the money is once recorded music is basically free, and it is headed that way fast.Even royalties on broadcast may change once the Internet becomes the new "broadcast" medium.

They just care that they're feeling it and it sounds good.Peace and hair grease.

I'm mainly talking about live performances....everyone knows that a CD will be a decent sounding product... I'm just worried about the live performance side of things....

Quote:I'm mainly talking about live performances....everyone knows that a CD will be a decent sounding product... I'm just worried about the live performance side of things....You really shouldn't be. You'll always need someone to play what you make. Even folks like Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, and the like, who are straight programmed in the studio, have bands to play live. It'll always be needed. BORING to look at someone on stage with just a computer. Most folks don't want that. That's why Prince still sells out his concerts. People like that live performance vibe. As an artist, I must confess...that's the way you'll be making your money and pretty much has been. But more so with the advent of the internet. The fear is unfounded. Change tends to do that though.

I'm not getting into an argument, but can I just explain why I think the way that I do without anyone saying "YOU'RE AN ABSOLUTE FOOL FOR THINKING LIKE THIS"Auto-Tune : Excellent piece of software, allowed Record labels to seek singers who weren't perfect because in studio they can fix the performance (those are the singers when you here live go errr yuck)This Software :AMazing piece of software, now allows not so perfect musicians to get away with not so perfect performances which can be fixed in the studio...I'm probably wrong in feeling this way, but auto-tune had allowed mainstream gigs to not be that pleasant e.g. breaking benjamin, great album, not so great performance.I'm just saying if Auto-Tune effected singers, in what way (negatively) will this effect musicians? I'm not telling anyone they have to see it my way - I can't stand trying to force people to believe what I believe, I'm just basically asking what do you all think could be a negative side to this? EVERY SINGLE thing in the world has a negative and a positive, we all know this softwares positives, what's the negatives?Take CareBrad

A possible negative: substandard "artists" that nevertheless look great will get an even more over-inflated false sense of self-confidence because they will be made to sound great in the studio. The proof will be when they attempt to go live. Unless, of course, the record label hires an MD that plays the right vocal tracks from his/her laptop at the right time.Mazz
