Devin! YES..thats what i used to do! before i got the blow 5s...um;( ok no not true...not on purpose...but i did learn to mix on a crappy 2.1 system all the same.i think a/b-ing with pro line near fields and consumer audio speakers couldnt hurt! as for mixing for tv..maybe you could mixdown your songs in mono and do an a/b with both sets of speakers

They are powered, AV40's... about $150 I think they were... I have a pair of $20 Gateway powered computer monitors I also have attached to my system... but I rely on the AV40's now... mixes sound good first time in my test spots... the car, the stereo.. etc.Geo

nice, Geo...our band's guitarist has the Korean model of thoseM-audios (actually i forget the korean company for the life of mebut both companies kind of designed them together)...and he loves 'em to death.he tells me he shaves the bass up a tad on 'em, but i forgotto ask him what kind(if any) of speaker stands/dampeners he had .is it snapshot time for us?; )

Mazz, you still got yours? --- Auratones were, I think, a single 5" speaker used to compare mixes for TV, especially the midrange.HEY! Come to think of it, I have a pair of Bose 141s in the garage which I think have a single driver in them. They actually sound pretty good when you turn up the bass and treble on your preamp a bit! --- Hmmm --- They're going to the studio TODAY! Ern

My monitors are the same Mackie SM450 powered PA speakers that I use in my live show. That way I hear it the way I'll hear it in the show. And you know what? ...my CD tracks sound good after using those monitors as well...the monitors were specifically designed to by Mackie have a very flat response.Ever hear of this being done? Is it actually fairly common?

Just did a little research on Auratones, and found an explanation of why they work so well, like the Yamaha NS-10Ms which I always reference to. Well, I found these babies:http://www.dacs-audio.com/Distribution/ ... in.htmSame concept --- midrange, midrange, midrange!Ern

That's it Ern! Thanks for filling in that blank for me. I remember (in 1988) asking an engineer "what's with the little guys at the back of the console? They seem out of place with all this other shiny gear..." I think they were brown, right? Hard to remember some of those years though....And Glenn, I do the same as you. I enable a set of PA speakers as well when doing the "backing track test" that you were talking about earlier. It's also helpful when I'm practicing for a live stint to sing while facing them.
Earplugs may be required for anyone over the age of cool.
