Re: any reason fans in the house?
hey Dryan...oh yeah! reason 4 has tons of new stuffthe whole automation process is more simplified and easier to edit...you dont have to make sequencer tracks for the instruments like dr. rex nn-xt etc (but still have to if you are making automation for effects like reverb or distortion etc)also on ver. 4 there is a synth thats called "THOR" and people are raving about itthere's regroove an "unquatizer"...and the ability to sequence different tempos/time sig. within a reson project (a great addition)((watch out about using delay effects when you create a tempo/time sig. change automation as it sounds fishy))editing the midi events is different..i used to hate it after changing to ver 4 but now im fine with itthere's a new arpeggiator(that i have yet to try out)i still wish there could be audio recording inand file conversion straight to mp3 and different effect unitsstill this proggy has me hooked...

Quote:Yep,I started my music stuff back up again several years back using Reason as my only piece of software. I didn't even know what electronica was, I just bought it because of it's "all-in-one" approach and was using it at that time mostly to create New Age type of stuff.I still use Reason but as a rewire withing Sonar (among other VST virtual instruments).Just upgraded from Reason 2.5 to Reason 4 and haven't explored it much yet. Generally I either use the synths in Reason or the fabulous Dr Rex as rewire instruments within Sonar for anything that remotely resembles electronica or where some of those elements are needed. I also have some great tabla loops in Rex format and in version 2.5 there used to be a "modify notes" thing where you could select a set of notes (like the last two beats of a tabla rhythm) and click a button to randomly modify the selected portion of the pattern by x%. Really useful for creating intros, fills, alternate beats. I just looked and everything is different so I don't know how to do that now. If they got rid of that I won't be happy. Amazing piece of software though. They recently released an upgrade/patch that fixes a lot of things with 4. The only one that I can remember off the top of my head is the thing that annoyed me most: the way clips were recorded. Version 4 recorded two separate clips on the same instrument track instead of one which, to me, was absolutely infuriating. But thats fixed now, so your REX issue might be taken care of too.@dryan: 4 is absolutely worth the upgrade. The Thor synth alone is worth the upgrade. I was using 2.5 and for me 3.0 wasn't quite worth the upgrade, but 4 is absolutely retarded. I would definitely upgrade whenever your budget allows for it.-Steve

Oh about the audio in issue...I would love to have that as it would save me some time and headache, but I think I read somewhere that Props said that they would NEVER include the ability to record real audio in Reason. So I think we may all be SOL on that one unfortunately -Steve

I'm using Reason 3, mostly via ReWire in protools. I only done one or two very simple arrangements totally in Reason, I typically use one or two elements as an added flavor/texture.I'd love to actually see some of the intricate projects you've created. Anyone game for sending me one of their files so I can see HOW you're using it?

"i just wish propeller head would allow for audio recording in reason(sigh)..then my life would be complete lol"PH are a very small company and trying to compete with Sonar/Digi/Logic is not a good idea. Instead, they focus on internal Midi instruments and use Rewire to interact with other DAWs. If they allow audio, then people will ask for VST effects on these audio tracks and t Reason will start getting bloated. I like their Keep It Simple Approach..and the rack metaphor Vermeer

Re: any reason fans in the house?
Reason is my program of choice... not because it sounds great. The reverbs and effects are kind of shabby. They are like Fischer price toys. I bounce all my tracks down and then mix them in Cubase or protools if i can work up the ambition (sooooo tedious) The great thing about it is that its ridiculously fast. I can slap a pretty tight sounding song a day together if i desire. It kind of lets you get the ideas right out of your head and then back out the speakers with the technology staying fairly transparent without inhibiting your creativity much. I would kill for a video track and vst support. Why can't you make a combinator to put vst's in? PLEASE propellor head... i will be your best friend... -M.R.H.

It facilitates song writing and recording instead of complicating things. I think within about 30 minutes in Reason I came up with a cool sounding west coast beat and I had never had any experience with midi before that. That was quite a life changing moment now that I think about it I agree that the effects aren't the absolute best, but I find them plenty good for producing broadcast quality instrumentals. Especially if you put the mastering combi in there. I also like how simple it is to do a quick mix/master in reason. Limited yes (why can't Props give us a 4 band eq on the mixer???), but it gets the job done. If I want it done any better I'll bounce all the tracks out and take it to a real mixing engineer.-Steve
