Re: ONOFFON
The ONOFFON SSP of the Day comes from a progressive rock review site in Great Britain called Stormbringer -Stormbringer WebzineProgressive Rock Reviewshttp://www.stormbringerwebzine.co.uk/Reviews/O ... tmlONOFFON - Surrender Now"Onoffon are a progressive rock band. The arrangements and structures are often very complicated, but sometimes very simple. Apart from from the bass, drums and guitar, Onoffon use other instruments such as saxophone, marimba, congo. The opening and title track 'Surrender Now', starts with some funky style guitar and harmonica. There's some nice harmonized vocals. The song always appears to be building up, but unfortunately never gets there. The next track is 'Rock Garden', this is a slower melancholy song with a memorable chorus. The third track 'Your Reality', starts off in a military march style, but then settles down into a bluesy style. Nice vocals and some superb guitar. The next track 'Weekend In Montreal', starts off sounding like modern jazz then flows into more of a lounge music sound. great saxophone.'I Don't Give No...', starts with a strange complex riff and contains some very odd Zappa like vocals as well as a fairly long harmonica solo. The sixth track 'Inside My Soul', is a very nice simple blues song, it's fairly slow with some nice vocals.'Please Baby Please', is more of a jazz blues track with a fairly simple structure. The percussion is the most complicated with sounds from bluejeans, fannypack, newspapers and fingersnaps, but it all works extremely well. The next track is an instrumental entitled 'The Gift Must Always Move', this starts off fairly quietly with some nice mellow guitar and percussion. And then slowly builds up with some nice harmonics, intricate guitar, nice bass lines and drums. Just after 3 minutes the music changes direction and a stunning lead break comes in, this last about two minutes then returns to the former. The ninth track 'Letter Received', is another blues track with some hilarious vocal changes. The next track 'If A Thief Were I', is a track dedicated to Merile Patricio and starts with some excellent acoustic guitar that reminds me of Nick Drake (British singer/songwriter). The vocals come in just after six minutes and show a lot of emotion. The final track is 'Remember Only...', is the longest track on track on the album and is almost a purely atmospheric piece. After around six minutes of atmospheric sounds from drums, keyboards, guitar and what sounds like orchestration the track then builds up with some excellent guitar work. Vocals come later and once again they are fairly emotional. The music then changes direction and tempo with some nice guitar and orchestration. This album will appeal to open minded listeners who don't mind taking time to listen properly to the music. It took me a few listens to get into it properly, but it was worth it in the end. Highly Recommended!!!"Thanks to Stormbringer for such a concise review of our CD...

Re: ONOFFON
The ONOFFON SSP of the Day is taken from the old Mp3.com BBs -Mp3.com BB ReviewsONOFFON - Various tracksLethargio Aug 08, 2002 at 20:04:53 Re: Re: Re: For Musicians: Techniques for Variation "I don't usually bother listening to people's music on this BBS, but you guys are rockin! Thanks for sharing! I don't have time to do a really detailed review but I can give a few bits out. In general you guys are really good and I liked a lot of the transitions and the tinking with the rhythms. Don't think I'm an asshole for criticizing, it's just the way I review music...there's a too many things you guys do well to mention and I'm sure you don't need me to pat you on the back to tell you about it. "Weekend in Montreal" I liked the energy of it, although the second time the theme comes back I think it could be spiced up with a variation on the melody, possibily making the sax hit a high note or something else that'll make it sound cool. "The Gift Must Always Move" - I liked this one the best, lots of cool instrument effects and it builds up to a kick ass climax, goes back to the original theme then its over...oh no wait its not! The melody after the recap is some good stuff, mmm. "Oceans Cry" - The chord changes and rhythms are little predictable, but I'm pretty sure a lot of people will like it. Especially in the section where the band bangs on those big chords I think a little rhythmic variation could add a lot! Cool harmonica solo. "Shadowglass" - I liked it in general, but I think the flute needs faster and higher parts. The flute can get super loud and shriking when they go up there, and it can add a lot of excitement if used in like a climax or something. It was well worth my time. I'll keep your site on my favorites. - Leth" droo! Aug 08, 2002 at 10:26:48 Re: Re: I give long reviews "hey von, I listened to the two tracks that you recommended, "Ocean's cry," and "Your mind." I am curious to hear the rest of your stuff, but for the sake of this string we'll just stick to those two. The last band I was in before deciding I was going to promote my friend's bands full time was along the lines of the jazz-jam sound. It's fun stuff to play in. What I can say about both songs is that they are very tight in every way possible. They both had very cool main riffs as well. I'm guessing that you could probably go off all day long on those riffs. My guess is, however, that when you guys play live you're even tighter and the songs sound even better. I love going to shows where the music is like yours. It's good to dance to (or do my whiteboy wiggle to) and fun to just sit and listen (that is until the beer kicks in and you've gotta dance again.) I think you guys have pretty good energy on these tracks, especially "Your mind." You sound like you really have fun doing those tracks. I think a mistake is made when people record the style of music that you guys are playing. They tend to overproduce the whole thing. It gets too glossy and loses some of the live charm that I'm assuming you guys have a ton of. "Ocean's Cry" may fall victim to that somewhat. Your mind, on the otherhand fits just right for my tastes. It's produced well and it sounds in place to me. You guys are obviously musically sound and are doing something that people really dig. I'd be very interested to hear 'Your mind' live. The stuff is better than much of the genre I think. I'd love to do my whiteboy wiggle at one of your shows sometime. - droo"Thanks to these cool reviewers...

Here's a couple of reviews from the old Mp3.com BBs again for today's ONOFFON SSP of the Day - these two tunes are in my most recent TAXI submissions -Mp3.com BB ReviewsONOFFON - "Mardi Gras" and "Weekend in Montreal"bvp121478 Sep 06, 2002 at 22:26:24 3 sentence reviews & rating out of 50... OnOffOn "Mardi Gras... This song is filled with superb musicianship, horns, percussion, guitar. etc... I am in awe of how everything meshes together so smoothly (make it sound so easy to do)... A new exciting take on jazz + rock (drumming)... Rating: 50" Clark2007 Sep 17, 2002 at 15:42:44 Weekend In Montreal-ONOFFON "Preface: Outstanding Jazz. Starts out bebop and the sax is killer. I loved the subtle delay effect on the sax as well. Just enough to make it more interesting without effect for effects sake. Later it goes into more of a smooth jazz feel, but never syrupy. This one definitely kicks. Originality: 9.9 Musicality: 9.9 Performance: 9.9 Production: 9.9 Overall: 9.9 Personal taste: 10"Our sincere thanks to bvp and Clark for their outstanding numerical ratings...

Re: ONOFFON
The ONOFFON SSP of the Day is an article that was written in Feb. 2000 about music on the internet - I have included the introduction and the information about ONOFFON -"Internet Music StrategiesNo one sincerely entertaining the business of music as a profession can afford to ignore the Internet music revolution. An Internet strategy is indispensable to anyone trying to make it in the music industry today, whether they are a musician, manager, booking agent, writer, or agent. The possibilities for Internet music are endless, and hence the hype. Music is a natural for the Web, and things are only going to get better as computers, connection speeds, and software improve. Just some of the possibilities available now are:Selling CDs directly to the consumer Selling digital downloads with no physical item ever shipped Creating an online press kit Allowing consumers to create their own compilation CDs Bundling multimedia with music (video clips, artwork, animation, etc.) Allowing samples of songs to be heard before being purchased Creating electronic fan bases The enterprising artists will certainly add to these possibilities, and many do. The following case studies serve to demonstrate how some 'net-savvy independent bands are using the Web to increase their exposure and potential for success.Harold Whaley, Jesus Presley, Gun and Doll Show, ONOFFON and Brown & Sinkiewicz are all successful independent artists who have used the Internet in different ways to promote their music. **When you are reading this, remember that the Internet is an extremely dynamic medium. There are new Web sites being posted every single day, and some of the Web sites mentioned below may be gone before you read this. Independent Musicians Who are Shaping Internet MusicONOFFON www.onoffon.com This polished jazz trio is a great example of how the independent musician can use the Web to promote music. They dedicate over 50 hours a week into their Internet presence and claim it is worth every minute of it."First of all, there is no precedence for what any of us are doing," says Von Babasin. "This is an entirely new medium and no one truly knows where it can go. I feel that the bigger your Internet presence is, the better your chances are of being heard." That is really the essence of a musician's Internet strategy - getting your music out there in cyberspace and increasing the probability that it will be heard."When we produce a new CD, I get it into the hands of as many people as I can," continues Babasin. "I add us to promotional sites, sell us from distribution sites, and get as much Internet radio airplay as I can. We've received press in magazines from the U.K., Sweden, Italy, Chile, Germany, Spain, and Brazil, as well as the U.S., all because of the Internet."In contemplating the drawbacks, Babasin points out "It's hard to convince people to actually purchase your music. Especially when you offer your music up for free download on a site like MP3.com." The bottom line? "The Internet has opened doors and passages that have never been available to a self-produced musician," says Babasin. "You can finally present what you do directly to the public on a credible level for the first time in music history. Simply put, there has never been a better time for independent music - period." Other Sites ONOFFON are champions when it comes to getting their music out on the Net. Our presence is larger than ever and just continues to grow exponentially. Wait until our third CD is released...

Re: ONOFFON
The ONOFFON SSP of the Day comes from a internet radio station in Santa Barbara, CA - Radio HeavenONOFFON"Hello Von....Received your 'OnOffOn' CD....it's truly wonderful..... We will be featuring your CD on our third program, which is in production now.....As well, your artist profile and 'Quick Clip' will be placed in our easily accessable artist archives (added bonus: all artists in the archives will also be re-featured on the main program on a random basis-)....I will email you again with the definite airing date of your show.....(we've just aired our second program this weekend.... you will probably be getting an email announcement about it soon....).As well: (this just in!! Radio Heaven has been approached by the 'EarthTuner/Digi Band' company to be promo'd on the 'CDROM' version of the EarthTuner software. They would like Radio Heaven to submit a sample 'promo' broadcast that buyers of the CD could listen to on the CD, as well the 'EarthTuner' product will direct listeners to Radio Heaven and other 'Real Audio' stations on the internet [news, music, talk, etc]. Obviously, this is good promo for Radio Heaven, but we also think it will provide some good exposure for the artists featured on the 'promo' broadcast CDROM. We would like to include a clip(s) from your 'OnOffOn' CD in the sample broadcast, with your approval of course. Congratulations on your continued success.jc/radioheaven"Our thanks to JC from Radio Heaven for his continued support of our music...

Re: ONOFFON
Today's ONOFFON SSP of the Day is from a site called GetPlayed.com - you receive reviews from listeners and artists and compete for chart position. On the jazz chart, "Mardi Gras" is #1 and "Weekend in Montreal" is #3. Here's a few reviews on both songs - while you're there, click the song name to read the reviews and/or leave your own -GetPlayed.comhttp://www.getplayed.com/view2.php?id=jazz&page=1ONOFFON"Mardi Gras"skabbo"A very solid song structure based around an clear, upbeat sax melody. Well played and well recorded."Steve Hall"Funky jazz with a well thought-out chord progression that adds harmonic interest to the solo work. Cuts the mustard."Rose"Ohhhh yeah! This song is ultimately danceable! Great mix of world and jazz sounds...really nice soprano sax...all I can say is OH BABY."Phil"This is well executed pop jazz ala Strunz and Farrah, only with more emphasis on the sax. The drumming was crisp and the musicianship was first rate. Nice to hear this music while crusing down to the French Quarter."Denis Simpkin"great sax sensability! the second instrument that strikes my ears is the Drummer and percussion. great feel! the production is also stellar!""Weekend in Montreal"friartuck"You guys have got it together alright."lance"I love this. Best I've heard so far on the site."skabbo"I like this song quite a bit. Flowing transitions from bursts to very clear, mellow sax riffs. Very nice work."Scott"Pro level tune. Very enjoyable! Although the sax is the lead voice, I'd like to praise the guitar work too. There's nothing stopping you from a big career in jazz."Denis"Great sax player! reminds me of coltrane, Brecker, with pop sensability, Production is a little out dated but...who cares...awesome potential...I'd have them on my site any time..world class!"Thanks to all for their great comments - and thanks to GetPlayed for having us...

Re: ONOFFON
The ONOFFON SSP of the Day comes from a DJ who has been playing our music now for quite some time - across five different stations, as he moves around from internet radio to real radio and back again. He's now broadcasting on Live365 - this playlist came from NWEZ.net back in June of 2001 - I'm not including the whole playlist, just that which pertains to ONOFFON - how else could it be SSP?"Howdy,I'm Aaron Childs. I host a 4 hour free-for-all program on the internet radio station nwez.net called "The Sonic Chronicles". It's pretty much half indie music and half whatever I feel like playing. It's Monday, so Dan "How Is Aaron Going To Pick On Me Today?" Ceo joins me in the studio. Today, we ALMOST gave away $320 plus about 15 cd's to Lynnette from Ohio. She nearly answered every question correctly on Do Ya Doubt Dan, and now knows that the original name of the band Queen was Smile and not The Warlocks (which was the original name for The Greatful Dead). We'll try to get rid of $340 next monday! (just out of curiosity.. how many of you are holding out thinkingit might make it to $1000?)Artist, Title, CD, label, time played (pacific time), date playedFeature Artist: OnoffonOnoffon, Shadowglass, Your Mind, self-release, 7:49 am, 06/04/2001Onoffon, Rock Garden, Surrender Now, self-release, 7:54 am, 06/04/2001Onoffon, Bebe's Song, Your Mind, self-release, 7:58 am, 06/04/2001Dan's starting to enjoy Onoffon, and asked if I would feature them today.Like I was going to say no!!!"Our thanks to Aaron, who continues to play us to this day, and Dan Ceo for requesting our feature! Incidentally, his playlist included bands like Pink Floyd, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Small Faces, and Traffic, as well as other indies he likes...
