FIrst of Micheal thank you for responding. I would abolutely consider it an honor I'm not even sure I'm worthy of if you would play through this stuff on Monday. BUT (and these are a couple reason TAxi TV doen't play too much in my decision to reup) is that I'm am rarely home to watch it due to my work schedule and won't be able to watch live on Monday. One of the great benefits of it is being able to interact with you during the program. Otherwise, I am the sort of person who learns better going through obsessive details in a book and less likely the guy to learn lots from watching videos. I don't learn my best that way. So not so much a comment on Taxi TV as the fact that I'm not home to take part in it in a way that would be most beneficial to me personally. Regarding the Road Rally, for financial and other reasons the last two years I've not been able to make it alhtough I would have liked to have gone. Maybe that situatiion will change for me by next year.... but no guarantees.

Those things being said, I would be honored , humbled and hopefully not publicly humiliated :) by the opportunity to have you listen to my tracks on and critique those on Monday. Because you asked that I post those in the Review station I will only briefly mention that the tracks I'm referring to are Backwash Billy and FLoaters, and were reviewed for a recent listing for Surf Pop. More details on that in the review section which I will post in immediately following this.

Regarding libraries I'm in, since we can't list specifics, all I can say is the ones 'm referring to aren't of the we take everything variety. Some of those I've submitted to multiple times. All list the shows that they place on. A smaller library with a couple shows, one with several shows in rotation they supply to. Best case scenario is one of those libraries took about half of what i submitted. ANother 5 of say 20, and another, with the tracks still in the submission process took 1 (so far) of the 9 I submitted). Hip Pocket was one of those that was a Taxi forward that I never heard anything back from and decided to submit. Everything on the cue reel was either a taxi forward or picked from a list of submissions for acceptance into library. The cue reel is my attempt to put my best foot forard Three in the cue reel were taxi forwards. Three were custom cues so to speak, 3 were returns.

The three that seem to have gathered the most interest so far are Life Inside Out ( a previous TAxi submission for instrumental "girl pop" in the vein of Pink/Kelly Clarkson. THis was written though prior to that listing), but was a TAxi return. Blue Streak ( and I don't know why, it's not one of my favorite tracks and may have been on my list of "least likely to succeed")seems to consistently get good marks and accepted into everything so far. Bkue Streak was originally written for a Stone Foxes/Sheepdogs instrumental listing. Hip Pocket was a Taxi forward that also seems to get consistent "likes" so to speak on the level of Blue Streak. It is one track where I would go back and say, it is probably one of my stronger ones.

One thing I have done with every track I've written in the last year is run them through Peer To Peer. That has been hugely helpful to me I think. If I were to list the first track(which I may put on my Taxi page) I submitted, a vocal track called Caught In The Middle, and then you heard the stuff on the cue reel, my hope is you would har an immense difference in the quality, largely due to Peer to Peer.

To put things in context, my little (yes a moment of frustration) rant) was in response more to having tracks consistently returned rather then this one return specifically. It , as you have suggested, is a relatively common theme and there have been several other members express and post similar "my membership is almost up, why should I renew" posts. I thought I would throw one in there with the additional wrinkle " We can submit on our own, why renew" twist. I know you know more then one of us one of us are thinking so I thought it might be beneficial to talk about the elephant in the room so to speak. I hope that doesn't come off as more challenging then I wanted it to but it is a consideration for some of us.

WHile I don't expect the bar to be lowered and to start forwarding tracks that are undeserving, a totally unfair question but another that has likely been asked before is "what does the quality of the library have to do with anything if we aren't getting forwarded anyway".
Again thanks for tolerating the long winded response. I certainly welcome the inclusion in Monday's Taxi TV. Please know I'm not avoiding but can't be there when it airs but if it you decide to do that know that again I redit the TAxi service for any gains I may have made to fate.
I will watch when it becomes available .. sorry I forget the details but will get those and watch. If I have made an strides at all, since Taxi has been there right drom the start when I startedsubmitting to libraries I have to give this service high marks and happy to have made the choice to join.

Sorry i posted this elsewhere but given everything thought I'd list this here also. Is in the review station, so feel free to move this or delete it also if needed.

My Tracks: https://soundcloud.com/chuck-mott/backwash-billy

https://soundcloud.com/chuck-mott/floaters-1

One issue I had with this is that I had actually written several tracks for a library already, so picked these up out of a possible 6. Spent a lot of hours listening to bands such as Best Coat, Surfer Blod, Beach Fossils, as well as the listed alas and though I had absorbed the vibe anyway:

ANyway this: Unsure this screams beach rock!

And this:

2) conduct a survey among your fans and ask them what they think you sound the most like. Would it be beach Rock???? I don't think so. Understanding who you are can really help you to decide on the listing to submit to and the opportunities you should pursue.

On Backwash Billy: Cool sounds. However, the drum performance/sound did not sound at the level we needed for a broadcast quality listing. Drums sounded too mechanical.

On Floaters: Awesome bass intro.....Such a cool riff. However, I'm just not feeling this for the listing.....this definitely has an easy cool sound, but there was some other stuff sent in that was perhaps closer than this.....

The Listing is here:CONTEMPORARY, BEACH-Y, INDIE ROCK INSTRUMENTALS in the stylistic ballpark of Best Coast, Real Estate, The Soft Pack, Jacuzzi Boys, etc., are needed by a great Film and TV Licensing company for a variety of TV placements. They need lo-fi Indie Rock Instrumentals that draw influence from the referenced bands, yet stay fresh, original, and optimistic. Your Instrumentals should have an easy, breezy approach that can transport the listener to the hipster-friendly West Coast! All tempos are welcome. Broadcast quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine). You must own or control 100% of your master and composition. Please submit one to three instrumentals online or per CD. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI and must be received no later than Wednesday, October 16, 2013. TAXI #S131016IR

Anyway submitted elsewhere my thoughts on having this returned.

They are both nice pieces Chuck but they really don't fit the listing. I don't get the Beachy feel to these. But that doesn't mean it was a waste of time becasue they might be used for another listing down the road. I do believe that the critique was right about the drums but drums is something we are always striving to get better at. I thought the timing in floaters was a little off with the bass in a couple of parts. It was a good attempt though and as always you should be encouraged by your progress. I have kept up with your work and can see that your hard work is paying off. Keep rockin man.

Peace,

Thanks....I relied heavily on the SPotify and did a lot of listening on what I think ws their surf channel. Very diverse and not like anything I would have considered beachy. I am trying to think if I quantized for whatever the AD loops I used for this track, gonna take a look.

Hey Chuck,
I feel your pain. We all go through this curve. It's only in the last year when it started to click more and my forward ratio started to
be where I wanted it.
My first year started off with a bang and when downhill as far as forwards and returns go.
It's only when I started collaborating and paying more attention to my strengths that my luck changed.
Regarding the drumming. You really need to become a student of drumming and listen to how a good drum part sounds.
The groove is everything and often less is more. ( unless it's Rush or speed metal :D )
I'm still in that learning curve myself and I find that just pasting loops isn't good enough.
You need to dissect those loops and make them your own. I will edit most loops to fit the parts better and it also creates an
original drum section. The drums should never sound generic.
Also , always go for the most organic sounding loops , especially for the listings you are shooting for.
Those drums have to swing and have character.

Rich.

I'm going to focus on that I think, the drum composing/programming end of things. The more I listen the more drum machine like this track sounds to me.

I posted something like this over on FB in reply to a similar post, the essence of which was: "My piece was played on a panel to less than enthusiastic response but yet was enthusiastically received by a library owner not long after".

The way I see it is this: A publisher (library, etc.) has to believe in their product (their catalog) in order to successfully sell it. They know their clients, they know what the clients like and the clients trust them because the publisher sends them only what they are looking for. One publisher may feel that the way a certain song is produced, the lyrics, the style, and on and on, may not work for their clientele, while the publisher two doors down may be falling all over themselves for it because it's perfect for their clients!

We provide a product, and if our product is marketable and high quality, then it will eventually find a home. Taxi has clients that expect only the best from them and Taxi holds a high bar on behalf of their clients. The fact that you can get into some libraries on your own, with all due respect, doesn't mean that much these days because it's pretty easy to get in some of the aggregator libraries out there, almost anyone with decent music can do that. That alone does not really say that you are going to be successful any more than having a lot of Taxi forwards guarantees a deal right away.

But ask yourself this question: Is the goal to simply get signed or is the goal to develop your craft and attract higher quality clients and as a result higher quality and longer shelf life placements? In my opinion your goal should be the latter if you are truly serious about your career and your long term goals.

Detach yourself emotionally from your music and learn how to pitch your music more effectively. Simply submitting 10 or 12 times a year is not enough to gain any traction and learn how to pitch effectively.

It's really easy to blame Taxi for having a high bar, but I challenge you to continue to raise your own bar and use the returns as learning and growth opportunities. Sure you can get into libraries but as you progress in your career you'll want better and better opportunities and there is a much larger world out there than the companies you can get in on your own. It's completely your choice if you want to stop there, but is that what your life's work is all about?

Hang in there and keep pitching. Rejection is simply a part of this business. I guarantee you that publishers absorb MUCH more rejection on our behalf than we can imagine, but without putting it out there, there's no way anything can happen.

Peace,

On the lighter side: ;) re the invite to be the subject of Monday Taxi TV...
is sorta like getting invited to witness an autopsy on a live patient. :o
You know that episode of Seinfeld, where Kramer and Jerry get invited to watch the splenectomy?!
But take comfort: the patient recovered miraculously.

Cheers.
