So, have I been promoted - or demoted - to Mr. Emmet? :|

Maybe the end cymbal was a ride, but it sounded to me more like an open hat.

As far as *&^%, i.e., "messing" with the drum inners, I thought that the easiest way to decrease the volume of the pedaled hat would be by lowering the midi velocities of just that note in the sequence and laying it down again to audio.

I'm not sure how you deal with drums, but for what it's worth, I separate each element (kick, snare, hats, toms, rides, etc.) onto its own midi track and then, once all the midi timing and velocity is right, I'll record each midi track onto its own (usually stereo) audio track. (Some people go further and record the overhead mics, room mics, etc. onto separate audio tracks, but I don't usually go that far.) Anyway, this gives you control over individual drum parts regarding mix balance, EQ, compression, reverb, etc.

Just something to consider, Mr. M. :)

Trying to give you the voice of authority, Rich! :D Which you richly deserve! No, you were right about that last shot. It WAS an open high hat. Replaced it! Thanks for that! I think I wanna keep the kit as is. I KNOW it just could be novel and that's why I'm fixated with it, but let me have my fun! lol I listened for that 1 minute crash. I see it, but to me it kinda adds to the… darkness of the situation. Dark and irregular. Real. Ya know?

As far a verb on the kit, I wonder if it isn't just part of that brush kit sound. I kinda like it! (That was directed at no one in particular)

Andy, before I do a bunch of cutting and snipping, or AUTOMATING I found a setting on one of my compressors that said Soft Jazz Singer, or something like that. Plugged that puppy in and I think, THINK it made a difference with the sibilance issue. If you get a moment, let me know! Or if anyone gets a moment!! Let ME KNOW!!!

I'm getting pretty happy with this. Loved the idea of clearing up that voice. So take out mids eh?> Wow… who'd thunk it!!!

Wait!! Correction! I just figured out how to change the volume with out having to ride the friggin fader! Everyone knows, I'm sure, but you create a group folder with voice in it, and then just move the string like thing, which rides the volume of the track, up and down as needed!!!! After all this time!

Anyway, here's the latest…

Alright

Following the advice of all (Andy, Richard - big thanks!) I think I'm pretty much done…

Andy, I went in and got most of it. Kinda like surgery. Well, I guess it IS surgery isn't it..
Thanks so much. Learned a ton!

much better. the attention to the vocal really worked.

EDIT: still a couple of syllables where you are close in and they are louder than the rest. lotsa bass.

New one sounds great Graham! The vocal level at the end feels right now, and it doesn't sound over sibilant or over compressed to me.
I hate to bring this up - but - listen to 2:08. On the word "won't", it sounds like there's a glitch in the vocal track. Bad edit maybe? Otherwise, I'd say your surgery was a success. This is really good.

Cheers, happy holidays!
Bob

Boys, I'm afraid it's time to call it… I appreciate everything said, SOOOOO much!!! But at some point I really have to say, 'good enough'…

Andy, I LOVE ANYTHING that can improve the quality of the voice. Vocal quality, IMO is about 80% of what makes these singer/songwriter types things. You've given me two gems, take out the bottom and take out the mid. Amazing.

Let me say this here Wait, let me repost...

re: those small differences in vocal level.

three ways to work it

1) automate eq to drop in and just make things a bit more equal. ha.
2) compress like crazy
3) use waves vocal rider or waverider.

a combo of all three usually works.

and i totally get it, sometimes its time to hang it up.

Wow,
My Internet goes down for a couple days and look what happens!
Great song my friend, sorry I was unable to chime in, but everybody did that better than I could have anyhow.
That AD jazz kit is a blast to mess around with ain't it? Sounds great!
Best of luck with this one, Feliz Navidad! -Rob
