Best compliment ever
What's the best compliment you ever got in response to your music? I got one of the best compliments I've ever had yesterday at the WCS conference. I had the opportunity to play a song for the president of the SF Grammy board. I played Perfect Enough and he said it was "a masterpiece". Nobody has ever used that word describing one of my songs and it came from someone high up in the industry. We pour so much time and effort into our music and then get criticized constantly, it feels amazing to get a little recognition.Nomi

That's really wonderful, Nomi! It is nice to hear a positive word or two occasionally.I remember when I had to audition to become a member of the Musician's Union, the person I played for was an esteemed bassist herself. When I was finished she said, "you play beautifully". I'll never forget that...

Quote:What's the best compliment you ever got in response to your music? NomiStrangely enough, I regard this as my favorite compliment ever, from an old thread about My Humps and/or Sexy Back. Jesse was nice to me back then, every once in a while. Quote:Steve,Though I don't care for My Humps or Sexy Back, one that I do like is called My Baby and Me. That really is a fine song. Bear in mind that HJ never lies about such things and never kisses a$$. You have my respect. One thing I find exceptional is that there is nothing wrong with the song IMO. At no point did I think, "OK, that part will have to be fixed." I might find it difficult to understand if that song did not do something for you, given it restraint (does not try to say too much), its subject matter and the fine singer you employed.

Firstly, Congrats Nomi on writing a masterpiece. Where do you go from perfection? When I was a teenager my band opened for an American act called Red Cross (or Red Kross....can't remember the spelling). I was the singer and lead guitarist. After we played the band went to the venue's dressing room (ie the toilets) and started picking our set apart (as paranoid teenagers do). The lead singer of the main act came in and, whilst having a leak, said these immortal words to me "You guys Rocked!".That memory will stay with me forever. Something about the way he said it whilst relieving himself told me it was the most honest praise, with no strings attached, that I'd ever get.BTW I recently recieved an unexpected review from a guy in the UK who I sent a CD to a loooonnnnng time ago which you can get a butchers at here.http://www.unpeeled.co.uk/index.php?pag ... entID=15He also sent me a rather nice email complementing me on my honesty in the letter I wrote him. Always nice to receive kind words from an obvious strait-jacket case.

(Even better than the "nice legs" compliments)... A compliment from someone high up in the industry holds so much weight and should make you feel honored. Moments like these are part of "what defines success"... Casey

Hearing your stories makes me feel good. It's such an emotionally difficult business it really helps to remember the payoffs.

Re: Best compliment ever
Quote:What's the best compliment you ever got in response to your music? Even though people who have met me find this VERY difficult to believe, I'm over 30 (uh, well, 40, well, hovering at 50 ). So for me, the highest compliment I get with my music is disbelief and doubt that I did whatever track they're listening to. I guess I have a special appreciation of people that do music (or anything for that matter) that's outside of what I'd expect. Vikki (Hummingbird) and more recently Nita (SquidLips) are examples of that. The first time I heard Vikki's music was before she had her new equipment. I listened to a couple of Country style tracks but then listened to couple of her "way out there" esoteric, tripped out tracks and I was so stunned and impressed that her musical mind works like that. As for THE comment that I held in the highest regard, it came from my daughter (she was either 12 or 13 at the time) as she and a couple of her friends were walking through the kitchen as I was reviewing a track of music I had just written. She stopped for a second and with her friends standing right there said "Daddy, your music rocks". BTW, after the "masterpiece" comment, don't tell me you passed up the opportunity to hit him up for some cash for "continued artist development".
