Quote: Creativity and its perception can not be quantized. It has no boundaries and the minute we try to define it, someone will inevitably break the definition... M2You're absolutely correct Hooks but that doesn't mean that the process of trying to understand it isn't a valuable excercize in itself and could even be the factor that points an artist towards breaking those very definitions. Holy Jaysus, we're turning into a bunch of geeks! Btw, let me add that if one is consciously thinking about all this stuff while writing then there's something wrong.

Quote:Yo Drew/Ringo!What Beatles songs would you play with a band?My list would be much like Erns, mostly the earlier stuff. I have found that most any crowd enjoys that.

It doesn't hurt to read and learn from what's out there. I'll admit there were some valid ideas in that article. It was done from a refreshing perspective, too. Too many words, though... Sheesh!

Getting back on topic. One thing I noticed the Beatles doing is to have either a chromatic melody and a diatonic chord progression or the reverse as in a diatonic melody and chromatic chords. The other thing that they used to spice things up that made them interesting is if the Verse was diatonic then the chorus was chromatic in some way and visa versa. Gongchime

I think John Cage's quote is "I have nothing to say and I'm saying it." My thoughts exactly.Gongchime.

The cool thing about the Beatles was that Paul M.'s music tended toward the bubble gum and positive happy feelings while John's tended toward the avantgarde and negativity. Take the line which Paul sings,"It's getting better all the time." Then John says, "It can't get no worse." Like a fine wine. Its not grape juice or vinegar. Just the right amount of bitterness and sweetness for a rich blend. Aaaahhhhh!!!! MerlotGongchime.
