Re: Pro Tools 8
Al, Are you on system 10.5.5? I haven't tried running PT8 on my G4 Powerbook... I don't have an LE interface to try. But, I'd think it'll run, though probably not that great. Surely it should be able to handle more than a stereo audio file though. If you do want to upgrade, you can't miss with the current Mac laptops. Even the least expensive MacBook will run high-speed circles around our old G4s.

Thanks Stick for your advice. I've got 10.5.5 loaded and it runs fine. PT8 chokes it though. Called Digidesign and they said G4 is not a supported platform. I don't want to break the bank on another Mac, so I really appreciate your guidance. Al

Re: Pro Tools 8
Just noticed the Pro Tools 8 thread. Figured better late than never to jump in.Not sure if anyone has heard of this computer (I only learn about it a few months ago when I began researching for a desktop built specifically for dedicated audio).Recently I purchased a RAIN ION desktop for my Pro Tools 8. My former desktop worked well for a while, but the more plugs and tracks the greater the difficulties. My ION has a AMD Phenom Quad Core with 1 Terabyte 7200RPM hard drive for the OS and 1 Terabyte for Audio. To date I have not had any problems with Pro Tools 8 running on this custom made computer.Anyone else out there running Pro Tools (any Pro Tools version) on a RAIN computer? I'd be very interested in hearing your thoughts about your experiences with the two.GB

Hi GB, I don't have any experience with that brand of computers--never even heard of them before now! Maybe someone else can help you here...Raags

Re: Pro Tools 8
I have a question for other PT8 users-- I had purchased the 003 Rack Factory with PT 7.4 in December, so I got the free upgrade to 8. My question is regarding plug-in's: before PT8 came out I downloaded every single upgrade and update that I could find for the various plug-ins, including Hybrid, Strike, etc. Would I still need to install these with the PT8 in place? Or would I install the updates only for the non-digidesign plug-in's? How do I know what version of the software is installed (i.e. with Structure, I can't even find which version I've got installed, as I only see the folders of sounds, etc.) Feels like I've been running in circles to catch up here, and any advice that you PT8 users can offer me, I'd be so grateful for. Last question-- regarding the loops, audio files, and samples-- if the installation process of a program automatically loads them onto my system drive, and if I want to keep all my samples on another drive, should I just find them and move them over? Or would I leave them alone? If I do move them, how do I make sure I'm finding them all? Seems most everything went into Applications, but within that file, some are in the Digidesign folder, and others are in their own separate folders. And some are in the Library folder. Thanks in advance for any advice....Raags

For the other stuff, if you're up to date in 7.4, all those plugs should work just fine. I basically just copied my plug-ins folder from my 7.4 system disk onto the 8 system as is, rather than going through the full install for each one. There were a few that didn't work right, as they must install some bits and pieces in various other places (like Stylus and Omnisphere, I think), but for the most part, everything works great. To see what version you've got, most plug-ins say it when you open them up in PT somewhere. Or, you can go to the Plug-Ins folder (there's an alias in the Digidesign/Pro Tools folder in Applications), select the plug and do Get Info (command-I) up near the top there's generally a version number somewhere. For the samples, most installers will ask you where you want to install the audio content (or give you the option if you click the "customize" button. I didn't pay attention to where it put the Structure samples, but there weren't all that many, so I probably won't worry about them. The loops that Digi included I just copied from the DVD straight to my samples HD. If you do move the samples, you'll probably just need to tell the plug in where they are when you open it up. Often it's a preference setting in the plug itself, and once they find them the first time, they'll go there automatically in the future. -stick

Re: Pro Tools 8
Thank you, Stick! I don't know if all my 7.4 versions were up-to-date, but I'll find out. I did know about the commmand-i, though I think I must be looking in the wrong folders for the actual program alias... I'll check the locations you noted. Gracias! I've got to call tech support Monday, as it looks like only about half of my 003 Rack Factory Bundle plug-in's are registering via my iLok, and I don't know where I'm supposed to find the other licenses (one Bomb Factory, 2 of my moogerfoogers, etc.)-- I'm not sure why only a few were uploaded to my iLok when I registered the 003 Factory Plug-in Bundles all at once. Your post was really helpful-- especially hearing that you may leave a few smaller samples on your OS drive. So the idea of keeping a separate sample drive is mainly for space issues and not so much for necessity in function. Glad to know I could leave a few elsewhere, so long as the program can find them. Whew. Thanks again, Stick! Raags

Maybe check there and see what people are finding. Structure is in the same spot as the rest of the plugs... in the Plug-Ins folder. I'm not sure if it shows a version number though with Get Info.

Re: Pro Tools 8
Found it! Yup, they were in the plug-in alias folder-- thanks! I just visited the DUC forum-- hadn't thought to do that! And indeed, there are a few posts and some support for these issues. So maybe I can figure some things out before making that loooooooong wait for tech support. Thanks again, Stick! Raags
