It all sounds too familiar.I can be the life and soul of the party but sometimes I just stop. Two of my partners in the past used to think I was being ignorant when I went quiet, but I was just re-charging my batteries. I could never convince them of that though. To them it was ignorance. Maybe we need to do that because of the intensity of our mental processes is very tiring.I almost feel a little sorry for those who don't experience that intensity.Helps me anyway

Solitude is great, however writing in the open with minimal noise works well sometimes.

It's amazing how after 20-25 minutes of T.M. your mind feels like you've slept 8 hours!Ern OK, I'll bite on the TM thread. I've been a TM instructor for almost 30 years now. Most of my music is inspired by my familiarity with deep inner spaces. Now, lately I've found that long walks and noisy places are great places to be inspired too and I feel some new stuff coming on!It's all good!-Allen

BUT why do they make such a hokus-pokus mystery over assigning mantras? At least, it was that way in the 70's when I learned it... Casey

CaseyWell, I actually learned it from a roommate that learned it the "real" way. I made up my own mantra. Won't tell ya what it is, though! When I get "stuck" composing, long walks are great, too. Beethoven loved long walks.I'll have to admit that when I got burned out on the L.A. rock music biz, I moved my studio to a mountain cabin with no T.V. or telephone. The quiet helped me produce my "last" rock CD, and turned me towards spiritual orchestral music.Today back in L.A., I feel I'm TOO isolated in my studio, and am making strides to get back into being around people more.Ern

Isn't assigning mantras, getting technical about something that is designed to relax and de-stress. Technicalities are stressing. It seems to defeat the object, but I suppose there is some sort of logical explanation for it all.Whatever helps your creative juices has got to be good in the long run. Can't say I've tried to meditate on purpose but I imagine that's just what I do when I switch off.I've been in situations where I feel my brain is about to explode and I head for the door. I walk until I'm clear, and sometimes that can be for hours.I've just discovered my mantra!!!!It's the rhythm in my step.

Me too. I like being with people but I need to be alone too. Mostly I write alone. I used to feel I was unusual until I realized it's a common trait shared by the many of songwriters. Many poets and writers share this trait too. Cool observation, Jeffe!!!!
