Having read all the links I dont think any are particularly newb friendly. The above link has a great image illustrating increased sound levels for final mixes over the years.
So get your waveforms to look like the last when you master?
Expansion. The confusion arises because some reference percieved effect while others reference the technical details. Bit like coming to the same point from diferent ends.
I think it is better to understand the tech theory 1st and then try to understand why that creates the effect.

That link is almost exactly what I saw in Katz's book - I probably just muxxed it up in any explanation I tried to give without reading it through enough. Bookmarked.
