Re: Pro Tools 8
Hey Stick, the one other thing I'm wondering is if it will work with 10.5.6...because I'm on 10.5.3 and that's the only current upgrade option...

FWIW, it's usually recommended to update your system with the Combo Updaters, rather than Software Update. I'm not sure when or why I learned that, but every time a big PT version shift comes along, I read it again.

So, as I keep reading... Looks like plug-ins from 7.4 are safe, but there might be complications with third-party RTAS VIs (anything not made by Digi). I'm going to build my new system piece by piece... first, all the plugs, then each VI one at a time until everything is running well.

Re: Pro Tools 8
I'm still waiting for my PT8 download to arrive (I just got the updated 7.4 system so it's supposed to come by Tuesday). I had been running with the Digi001, so this upgrade is huge, and I'm excited! About those uploads-- do you generally do system (OSX) uploads first, then PT, then plug in's and Rack Factory extras, then any 3rd party purchases after all that? I'm getting all the pdf's printed off (I prefer to have a hard copy, rather than reading them on the computer screen), and there are a ton of them, as I'm assuming I can just start with all PT8 guides (and no earlier 7.4 ones). I've also heard about dedicating hard drives to different purposes. What do you all recommend? I've got a Mac with 4 great hard drives, and I'm planning to load all my system and PT program software onto one. As for the plug in's I've heard that we could put all the sound samples on a separate drive and keep all the programs on the main drive (with PT). Is that possible? What do all you PT users do?I'm going to try to have fun with all this, though I'm a little overwhelmed by all this new software. I'm plunging head first into the new worlds of plug in's, sound samples, and midi! I'm going to be buried for months!Luckily, my husband is a good cook.

Get the system installed. You want 10.5.5... NOT the most current. The ideal is to install the System fresh. Don't upgrade from Tiger on the same drive. I actually get a bootable firewire drive, and install my upgrade on the fresh drive... from scratch. Then once I get it all dialed, and everything's working, I'll wipe my internal system drive and move it over. That's cool... people on the DUC are complaining some that they aren't doing printed manuals. I guess they'll be available at some point. But, the "Help" menu when you have ProTools running is VERY handy. You can just type in what you're looking for, and it takes you to the manual, or grabs the right menu and highlights the commands you're looking for. Very cool. System and Apps on one. I have samples spread out on a few drives. I have one drive that's my Workdrive, for all audio. Then there's the backup drive(s). I'm going to be buried for months!Yeah, there's some great plugs in PT8 for sure. And the included VIs are really good. The B3 is great. The acoustic piano isn't Ivory, but it's certainly passable. Vacuum is an analog synth emulator. Very cool. Drum machine, sampler, etc. I haven't dug into the new AIR plugs, but I'm sure they're pretty solid. Have fun! It's cool stuff.

Re: Pro Tools 8
Hey Brian,Thanks for your replies! Very helpful indeed (bookmarked DUC site- thanks for that too). Yeah, I did call them to get a PT8 manual, but they said there's no sign of when (or if?) they'll be out. I'm printing off everything BUT the manual, as I'm banking on getting it down the road, and using that "help" menu for now.You mentioned only using OS 10.5.5 with the combo update and not the most current version (which is 10.5.6, I see?). Thanks for that tip-- done!So the programs will function okay if the program and samples are on two entirely separate drives? I've got one drive for programs, one for samples, one for recording audio, and one for dedicated backup. What program do you use to backup your Mac drives (sounds like you have one that copies the entire drive)? And when you put your samples on a separate drive, do you just put them all in a folder labeled "[company name] samples"? Is it just a matter of accessing them via a particular folder name?I'm enormously grateful for your help! I'm waiting until their Dec 30th date to send them a note saying I haven't received my free PT8 update yet. Can't wait to get rolling! There sure are some really cool functions in these updates!!
