Here's the key; deliberate practice requires three ingredients: repetition, immediate feedback and goals. This would tend to suggest that playing live music is the fastest way to get better at playing music, particularly if your goal is to not be pelted with rotten fruit.
I found that most people practice mistakes. They don't stop and work out why they keep making the same mistake and correct it. It is too much hard work to unlearn a mistake.
